for the name Schyler (Skylar) our last name is 3 syllables. This will be for a girl btw, and if you can think of anything patriotic that would be great....She'll be arriving between Flag day and Independence Day.

Thank you for your help.

You're right about the name possibly being mispronounced by people who aren't familiar with it (obviously LOL), and if that's their concern they'd probably just go with Skyler to make it more clear cut.

My only point was that, while I have seen a few people who assumed Schuyler/Schyler was pronounced with an Sh type sound, in my experience most people recognize this as "Skyler." You are right in assuming that the Dutch pronunciation would be a touch different, but only in that it would be a more gutteral sound, much like the ch in Bach or Loch, if that makes sense. Another example, though not quite as gutteral a sound, would be the word school, which is used and pronounced in Dutch pretty much the same as it is in English (can't get much closer to Schuyler than that ... the beginning spelling/sound about identical). Did you perhaps study German? It is my understanding that, while many sounds are similar to the Dutch language, the sch sound would, in fact, be pronounced much like sh if this were a German name. Maybe that's the discrepency?

Anyway, the point is, yes, the name has the potential to be mispronounced ... as do many other names, no matter how common or uncommon they may be. And if you are one of those who would mispronounce it, that's fine, and even good to point out. However, it doesn't mean they are "forcing a mispronunciation" of what is actually a more traditional spelling. It simply means it's not a name you are familiar with (and that's fine too). If this bothered them, they would probably use the more American spelling of Skyler. But since the post was intended to get middle name suggestions, and from her wording I'd assume this child is already pretty definitely named Schyler, it just seems a bit pointless (or even rude) to try and second-guess it or make it look like she doesn't know what she's talking about, when she's actually quite right. That's my only reason for posting.
