What is classic AND rare?
| Sat, 03-22-2008 - 5:41am |
My name is Bethany Elizabeth. I have always LOVED my name because it is so classic, but I haven't ever met many Bethanys. What names, for boys or girls, follow this same kind of guideline? Something that is classic and timeless, but isn't seen in every birth announcement or kindergarten classroom? Any suggestions? Thanks!!

By the way, here are some names I've already thought of, so feel free to comment, but PLEASE add some fresh thoughts if you have any. Thanks!

I'm going to start with your list and see what that sparks...
BOY
Elijah Grant: Love Elijah, but it's having a popularity spell. Grant, on the other hand...
Wesley Grant: Not seeing this much--Weston seems to have replaced it--so I think you'd be safe.
Wesley Grey: Ditto, though I think Grey/Gray is picking up a bit...but it's a nice balance with Wesley.
Jackson Luke: Jackson/Jaxon/Jaxson (yeah, I've seen it!) are all pretty active right now...so I'd skip it. The "son" names are all hot right now, both on boys and (inexplicably) on girls.
Weston Grant, Weston Grey, Weston Luke: This is getting a lot of play right now (as is Easton...I'm just waiting for Northton and Southton to show up) so I'd side with Wesley.
Jaredon Luke: I can't honestly figure out how to pronounce this...I'm guessing "not a classic." And, with all sorts of -dan and -don endings being trendy, I don't think it would have the uncommon quality you're looking for.
GIRL
Adelyn Grace: with the current pash for all things Ad- this isn't likely to be uncommon; putting Grace in the first name position feels less common, though.
Audrey Madeline: Not as common, though I do know a few small ones. And Madeline is...everywhere.
Nadia Audrine: This would get two thumbs-up from me. The only Nadia I know is 32 now.
Sosie Audrine: Too cutesy for my liking; the name itself is rare, but that -e ending sound is pretty much all over the place.
Audrine Sophia: I can't say Audrine floors me, but it would definitely not show up on every third child. Sophia, on the other hand, is a little more familiar. So it's a good balance.
Claire Nouvel: Claire is everywhere; Nouvel...well, that's far more Jolie-Pitt to me than Shiloh is because I'd never heard it before they used it and they expressly took it from Brad's favorite architect...so this would be a no from me.
Laila Kate: Laila/Leila/Layla seems to be picking up in the wake of the Lily storm, so I can see this not being as uncommon as you might like. And Kate...is definitely everywhere, whether as a full name or a nn for Katelyn or Katherine.
There are a lot that come to mind that could fit your criteria, as well.

Classic and rare?
That's the category I go for too. I like Clara and Eve for that very reason. Also look at these top names in England. They're all about classic right now. It's not as big of a trend here, though, so you can easily steal!
