My opinion is that yes, people can always find a way to pick on others. But why give them "fuel for the fire" so to speak. Richard will probably always be Dick. My last name sounds dangerously close to the "f" word. Let me tell you I have been teased about it my entire life. My best friends initials are PMS. What were her parents thinking when naming her. She is constantly teased by co workers and was always teased during high school. I feel that if it is not neccessary then why give your child a reason to be teased when they havent done anything? My parents couldnt control my last name being that way it is, but Richard and Peytons parents could.
If it's not terribly obvious--like the Suzie Doobie thing, that doesn't actually rhyme--I wouldn't give it a moment's thought. And I'd actually only really worry about it with an uncommon name. Things like Tucker and Cooper rhyme with some unpleasant things but they're everywhere--a little safety in numbers that you wouldn't get with, say, Vitoris. And Richard...just don't use the nn Dick. I seriously wouldn't worry about it.
I know what you mean! I'm going through the same thing. My husband and I have a name that is very unusual for our baby, if it is a boy. I'm the master of making a mom think of all the bad possibilities that a kid could be called. I decided though, It really makes no difference. If your kid is raised with a good self image, they don't care what people say. I use to call my friend in High school "Maxie pad" his name was Max.

I know a lot of Richards and most of them go by Rick or Rich, so I don't think that one's so bad.
