Gemma? This is very popular in Europe, but I do not hear it much in the US. Do you think it is to European? My dh loves the name Emma but is soooo popular, I came across this and thought he might go for it? (Of course, he still wants GRACE, so I am still searching.)

All comments welcomed, be honest...would you use Gemma? Gemma Grace?

Thanks!!!

Gemma seems a wonderful compromise of Grace and Emma, as well as a nice way to sidestep Emma's overwhelming popularity. It's also a nice, simple name that everyone's heard of, even though it's not overly popular in the US, so it seems like a great option for you.

I wouldn't use Gemma Grace, FWIW, but you might be able to sell Gemma to your dh by pointing out that it's a nearly literal combination of the beginning of Grace and the name Emma.

I LOVE Gemma, and I wouldn't be surprised if it does become more popular in the US soon. Gemma Grace isn't terrible, but I think a different middle name would be better. Like the PP said, you can sell it to your DH by pointing out that Gemma is an even better combination of Emma and Grace, then pick something new for the middle name.

Gemma is beautiful! It's a really nice compormise between Emma & Grace. Gemma Grace would be fine though if your dh will go for it in the mn spot.

I don't see Gemma getting too popular in the U.S. It wasn't even in the top 1000 for the Social Security lists last year. There's a pretty minut possibility that it's going to jump catastrophic amounts up to Emma or Grace's popularity during your daughter's childhood.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for all of your input! Unfortunately, DH does NOT like Gemma. I do not know why we are having such a hard time w/ girl's name. Is this common? We really like Will for boy (William Hardy - both family names) but we like many boy names and can AGREE...just not having the same luck w/ girls! Here are DH top choices at the moment...

Willa Grace (I ask him/ are you willing to give up Will for son?)
Willa Olivia (He likes the fact that her initials will be WOW!?!?!)
Emma Grace (He LOVES This!!!) Super popular here at the moment (Alabama)
Emma Charlize (Charlize is after grandfather that raised DH - Charles)
Olivia Charlize
Rory Grace

Notice...he wants GRACE! Gracie reminds me of a dog. I like Grace but I wished I could find the perfect double name w/ Grace as fn.

Are we crazy or what?!?!

What about Charlize as a fn? I think it's very pretty!

What about Charlize or Charlotte as a fn, after dh's grandfather? How could he say no to that? hehe That would be very sweet, and neither are nearly as popular as Emma or Grace (#2 and #14 respectively). Even Charlotte, which seems very familiar, isn't even in the top 100.

Ps. Don't let him choose your dd's name based on funny initials. The poor kid has to live with the actual names, and the initials won't be that humorous for that long ... especially if she gets married and changes her ln. Then she's still stuck with Willa Olivia, but WOW is gone. LOL

He likes Charlize nn Charlie but then we are back to mn issues. I know it may be hard to believe but he takes this very seriously. He really thinks meanings, and initals are important! We did like Charlize Olivia or Claire Olivia...COW would not work.
Thanks!

If you truly love the name, you could go with Charlize Alivia simply to avoid the COW initials. It's not a variant I would generally go for, but in your case I could see the point. ;)

You might also like some similar-sounding non-O mns, like Amelia, Aurelia, Adalia, Floria, Nydia, Tavia, Victoria, Violet(a), Vivian/Vivienne, etc.

Hi! I think with the name Gemma people would always says "Did she say Jenna or Emma?" I would go for Jenna instead if want something similar to Emma. I think it is easier for people to understand. I love the name Grace but like Emma it is really popular right now and she will have lots of girls with that name in her class. I wish you the best of luck because our little guy is debuting next month and we finally narrowed it down to three names but we still have not decided. It is a really hard decision. Best of luck and Happy New Year. Bye
