While the name is nms, your friend is way off base in her reaction, especially if this has happened more than once. As long as you like it and are aware of other people's opinions/reactions to a child with that name, go for it. Just let your friend know how her comments make you feel. Once the child is here, the name will become part of her and you probably won't hear such negative comments on it, at least not from close family or friends. Good luck! :)

I think Eloise is just beautiful! If your dh is on board then I don't think anyone else's opinion matters, but you'd probably find, as someone else suggested, that your friend just has very different taste. I'm working on naming my second baby now, and I'm much more selective about who I run my choices past, because I know how some of my friends would react to them without even asking, and I know who has similar taste to mine and therefore trust their judgment more. Especially if your friend doesn't have kids yet, she may not be aware that lovely, old-fashioned names are being used on babies now and fitting them perfectly! Once she sees the adorable little person to go with the name Eloise, it will all fall into place (and if it doesn't, she won't tell you - lol!).
Don't doubt yourself - it's a great name!
All the best,

I think that its a beautiful name! It's classic, but not as overused as some other classic names. Also, I really like that theres those Eloise books. They can be a connection for her. I know that my little sister loved the Madeline books. Although her name is Margaret (similar enough i guess) she always identified with her and loved having that special connection.

I think it is original and very classic. Don't mind what your friends think. I think it's wrong to snicker at a name when you might possibly use it. Keep it to yourself and if you have a girl and name her that, nobody will snicker. I think it's cute. My friends did the same when I wanted to name my daughter Charlotte and instead I chose Emma, now I am having my second daughter and I'm making no consultations, I'm calling her Charlotte because I regret not calling Emma that. It's you and your hubby that need to like the name, not the rest of the world. Nobody is going to consult you to name their kids. Keep that in mind. There is always a worse name out there. It's not like you want to name her Bertha!!!

I have an aunt named Eloise and I've never liked the name. I tend to think of it as a very out of date name and I just don't like the sound of it. But I agree with the previous poster who said that you should go with something you like and not try to please your friends. I think as long as it's not a name that won't cause mass teasing on the playground it's fine as long as you like it. That being said - I don't think it's fair to ask for your friends' opinion and then be upset when they give you an honest one. If you know you like it no matter what, just don't ask! :)

Oh I think Eloise is a beautiful name!!!!!!!! And not one you hear every day so even better!! And yes I would say something to your friend, ask her why she reacts that way. It's a beautiful name though so dont let anyone tell you different.
