Apparently, this is like my uncles middle name. It's Tevin (TEH vin or TAY vin), and it means beautiful at birth. It's an irish boys name. Just wanted to get everyones opinion on it. I am seriously thinking of adding it to my list.

I've never heard it before and it wasn't listed on behind the name but if it is a real name I actually really like it. :)

Well, it SOUNDS Irish due to its similarity to Kevin, Devin, Teagan, etc., but I've never seen it listed anywhere as Irish in origin. Everything I've ever seen has listed it as a variation of Kevin -- "Kevin with a T". As far as I know, it's faux-Irish...the way Zaidan a faux Irish name "Aidan with a Z".

I associate it immediately with the R&B singer Tevin Campbell.

It's not a name I would use. I LOVE Irish names, but only if they are solidly Irish. If you like the sound of Tevin, you might like Devin, Teague or Tiernan.

However, if you want to use it to honor your Uncle, that's a different story. I believe family tradition trumps just about everything else when it comes to naming, so I'd be much more inclined to encourage you to use it if it is the emotional significance you are attached to.

I checked a few baby name sites, and the only place I found it is on BabyNamesWorld.com. It says its a Gaelic form of Kevin. Does this mean faux irish or geniune irish? I am not attatched to my uncle, I just loved what they said it meant. Beautiful at birth. I love that. Theres nothing more breathtaking than your brand new baby.

It's definitely not a variation that would be used by Gaelic speaking families. I think it's safe to say this is a faux-Irish name.

The name Kevin is the anglicised form of the gaelic Caoimhín (pron. Kee-veen or Kwee-ven). The gaelic name is derived from the ancient Irish Coemgen, which is composed of two parts: "coem" means "kind, gentle, handsome" and "gein" means "birth". That is where the meaning "beautiful at birth" comes from. (And it is a beautiful meaning. It's no wonder Kevin was such a popular name at one time.)

Replacing the "Coem" (or the anglicised "Kev") with any other sound, changes the meaning of the name. It is clear that Tevin does not mean "beautiful at birth" because it doesn't contain the sound that gives the name the meaning "kind, gentle, beautiful".

I have seen places that give the origin of Tevin as Terence + Kevin. But since the meaning of Terence is unknown, that doesn't help you with the meaning. Sorry.

I've never heard of this name before, and I don't know whether it's "real" Irish or not (though I'm thinking probably not). I wouldn't use it (too many names that I like much better, e.g., Seth, Linus, Michael), but I think it's a fine name. If you decide that you love this name, I think you should go with your heart and use it. If you decide that you don't really love it, there are so many great boys' names, I'm sure you'll find one that calls out to you.

If you wanted to use it to honor your uncle, I can respect that, and the family connection is nice.

I'm afraid the name is NOT Irish, however, and cannot mean "beautiful at birth." Kevin does -- though I've also seen this more literally translated as simply "beautiful birth," referring to the actual birth, not the child himself -- but since Tevin lacks the actual root sound that gives the beautiful meaning, as Annie already pointed out, the same does not hold true for this created name. The best meaning Tevin can have would basically be "a created name formed using the sounds of Kevin, with a substituted T beginning."

I like the way the name sounds (assuming it rhymes with Kevin) and I like that it's a family name for you.

It's fine but you will definitely be hearing everyone else call him TE-vin (rhyming w/ Evan).
