Hi there~ Would you tell me what you honestly think of this name and how you would spell it?
We are thinking Mckayla Rose, (nn Kayla) or just plain Kayla.... but I dont know which way is best to spell McKayla..
We were originally thinking Kaia, but none of our family didnt like it. :(
What do you think?

I think Michaela (that spelling) and Kayla are beautiful names. However, so do tons of other people. Kayla, Kaylee, Makayla, and all the spelling variations are incredibly common. Add in the other cutesy, popular C/K names like Carly, Kelsey, Kylie, etc., and it makes for some very confusing classrooms.

If you absolutely adore the name and can't find another name you like as well, then use it. However, be aware of its huge popularity. If I were you, I'd look for something else.

Some other names you might like that don't seem to be quite as popular...

Thanks so much for the responses!
Well, when it comes to the "popularity" thing, Im lucky, because I live a really small (BEAUTIFUL) town in Colorado, and none of the "popular" names are popular here. There isnt a Emily, Madison or Aiden in the bunch :)
LOL... So Im pretty free to pick what I want without feeling like she will be the 7th "Ka"-something in her class.. I glad to hear both of you think the name is pretty though.. I'd love to hear more opinions!!

Michaela/Mikayla is how I would spell the name. Kayla is very common in my area.

Names with similar feel, but not as popular:
Lila - my first choice since it is pretty like Kayla and easy to pronounce like Kayla
Andrea, nn Andie
Camila, nn Cami
Calla, nn Callie
Caroline, nn Carly
Cassidy, nn Cassie
Cora

If you really want Kayla as a nn to something unique: Kayliana or Kalani

I love the name Makayla (spelled this way...Michaela looks too masculine to me). Kayla is a cute nn for it. I say go for it!

The trendy/popular issue bothers me even if you live in a small town, because eventually she's very likely to go out into the world. But, if it's doesn't bother you, that's your decision.

As for Kayla -- it seems very immature to me. I don't mean that in a negative/mean way, I literally mean it sounds very young and juvenile -- like a sweet nickname for a little girl. It doesn't seem very grown up or professional. I would definitely advise you to use it as a nickname.

I think you can go two ways with a full name. You can use Michaela (I prefer this correct spelling a million times to the trendy/made up Makayla/Mikayla/McKayla variations.) and call her Kayla/Kaela/Chaela (pick a spelling -- the nickname doesn't have to be spelled exactly like the full name).

OR you can use a Ka- name -- Kathleen, Katherine, Kate, Katrina, etc. Long before the the Kayla/Kailey trend started, I like Kayla and Kaylee as nicknames for Kathleen. (And my sister was Kathryn Leigh and we called her K. Leigh -- pronounced like Kaylie)

Giving her a full name like Kathleen or Michaela gives her the option of using something more grown up when she's an adult. Maybe she'll want to be Kayla forever -- and she can do that. Lots of women use nicknames all their lives. But if she needs something more professional -- for her resume, diplomas, etc -- she has that option.

I call it the Supreme Court test. Imagine the president announcing his choice for the newest Supreme Court Justice. I can hear him saying Justice Kathleen Smith or Justice Michaela Smith, but Kayla Smith still sounds like a little girl, not one of the most powerful women in the country.

The name itself- Kayla- has a very pretty ring.

The -ay sound trend is so huge. The fact that you live in a small town helps right now, but not later. Imagine her college graduation, for example when there are: Kayla, Caitlyn, Kate, Makayla, Haley, Avery, Aiden, Hayden, etc.

If you decide to use the name, I strongly prefer Michaela. Mia, May or Ayla is a pretty nn.

So sorry to be critical, esp. when a name has true beauty, but you or she may live to regret it!

PS- Kaia is gorgeous. Your family will get used to it!

Best wishes,

I would spell it Michaela. Second choice would be Mikayla.

Michaela is the feminine form of Michael to me, not a "Mc" name.

However, if you plan to call her Kayla, I would just name her Kayla.

It was really popular a few years ago but seems to be less popular now (based on my own personal experience, not the social security website).

There is a girl in my DD's 2nd grade class named Kayla, and I know a few others that are 5 or older, none that are under 5.

Good luck!

As a pp mentioned, Michaela is the actual spelling. It is not a Mc- name (and MiKayla, MaKayla, etc. just look that much worse, FWIW). If it's Michaela you like, you can still call her Kayla as a nn. The spelling really doesn't matter.

I know others have already addressed the popularity, so I won't even bother. However, I did noticed that you mentioned liking both Kayla and Kaia, sooooooo ... have you considered Kyla? It's still a very-similar-sounding K name (pretty much an exact combination of the two you'd mentioned, actually ), but it seems a bit more "mature" to me, probably because I equate it with it's masculine counterpart, Kyle, and I've known plenty of men named Kyle, so it doesn't seem as cutesy or immature, KWIM? Anyway, just another option you might like to consider! ;)

HTH
