What do you think of the name Isla?

I posted this dilemma to my due date group and it was suggested I try it here, as well. I love the name Isla (prounounced like Island without the "nd"), but everyone I show it to thinks it's pronounced Izla. I've experimented with different spellings, like Ila, Ilah, Eyla - but none of them seem as pretty to me, and all of them still seem to leave room for mispronunciation. I don't want to doom my daughter to a lifetime of correcting people! Should I just use it as is, change the spelling, or give it up completely? There is a new up and coming actress named Isla Fisher who was on the movie "Wedding Crashers". I keep hoping her successes will make the name more familiar, but I can't wait to find out. My baby is due October 18th! Help!

I love, love, love the name Isla - just as you would pronounce it. I would use it as is. She might have to deal with pronunciation issues, but at least she won't have to deal with spelling issues! I also think of Isla Fisher, who is pregnant!

I really think most people will pronounce it like the Spanish word for island (isla) & say EECE-luh.

I do like the sound of what you're looking for ... how about Ayla or Aila? I like Ayla.

I agree with the previous poster, though I prefer the spelling Aila.

I love it. Yes, some people will mispronounce it -- but, if you love it, I say use it.

I love it. I think it's such a fresh name and while I usually make the case for avoiding giving the child a lifetime of correcting people, I honestly don't think this one is a hard one to pronounce. Aside from that, the alternative, more phonetic spellings are all bad IMO. I say go for it!

I think Isla is really nice.
None of the other spellings really look good to me... Ila looks too short, Ilah looks like i-LAH, Eyla looks like EE-la or AY-la, and i would 100% pronounce Aila or Ayla like "AY-la."
The only other spelling I think is decent is Eila, but I like Isla better.

I think it's a very pretty name, but yes, it will get mispronounced fairly often.

Love, love, love this name! Please, use the correct spelling! Isla is a "known" name and if someone doesn't pronouce it correctly, simply correct them.

Isla, the proper spelling for a lovely name!

I absolutely LOVE the name Isla!! We are expecting a boy in October,he would have been Isla Violet if he was a girl:)
PLEASE do not use any of the alternate spellings...they take away from the beauty and uniqueness of the name and look made up and would still get mispronounced. Isla isn't terribly difficult to pronounce, my daughters are Avery and Monet and I have to correct people on how to pronounce their names sometimes! With all the different names out there it is pretty common to have to ask about pronunciation anyway, and then people know it and it is not a big deal!
Good luck!
PS...what would her name be if you were having a boy? We are still undecided:)
