What do you think of the name Isla?

I posted this dilemma to my due date group and it was suggested I try it here, as well. I love the name Isla (prounounced like Island without the "nd"), but everyone I show it to thinks it's pronounced Izla. I've experimented with different spellings, like Ila, Ilah, Eyla - but none of them seem as pretty to me, and all of them still seem to leave room for mispronunciation. I don't want to doom my daughter to a lifetime of correcting people! Should I just use it as is, change the spelling, or give it up completely? There is a new up and coming actress named Isla Fisher who was on the movie "Wedding Crashers". I keep hoping her successes will make the name more familiar, but I can't wait to find out. My baby is due October 18th! Help!

I forget who started this thread, sorry! So this is to "all".
Just one thing to keep in mind with this name: remember that it sounds like "I'll ah" so depending on last name you may reconsider. I think of this because my last name is Killam (try out this combo and you'll see what I mean! It is pronounced Kill'em).
:o)

Oh, and yes, my initial inclination is to pronounced it as in Spanish.

Thank you! We love Solomon's name too, except for the fact that he gets "Sol" a lot, and I'm really not a nicknamey person.
We came up with it for a couple of reasons. DH wanted to honour his grandfather...but his name was Simcha (the "ch" is almost like spitting...). Solomon makes my mega-Catholic grandmother happy that we picked a "Christian" name, and it makes DH's relatives happy that we picked a "Jewish" name. LOL!
I don't know if we'll ever strike such an even balance again. :o)

Oh, one more reason we chose it: Max means 'the greatest' so we felt we needed a 'big' name to go with Max. Solomon being a king and all seemed to fit the bill.
Sadly, 'peaceful' is not much of a description for our Solomon yet! LMAO!

i think isla is beautiful...like lilah but more current. i did think it was pronounced "eesla", like the spanish word for island, even for the actress you mentioned, but the other variations in spelling could be mispronounced as well. i say go with the name you love. some corrections on name pronunciation in life can be balanced by having a unique name.

HI, love the name and the spelling it is a keeper! It will get its share of misproununction but I have heard the simpliest names get misprounounced so go with what you like and do not change the spelling!!!!!!

Beautiful name! I have a cousin who's never had issues in our family (although that side is pretty solidly Scottish). I imagine the pronunciation issues would depend where you live, it's not a hard correction though - most people can pronounce 'island' with no trouble.

If you love Isla, I vote for keeping the spelling as is.

I really like the name Isla! And I think it is quite well known because of the actress to stop alot of misprounciation. Good Luck!
