Hello,

I'm thinking about naming my daughter Luna. What do you think about this name?

I have loved this name since I was younger and I think it sounds very feminine. However, there is a character called Luna in the Harry Potter books whose nickname is "Looney" because she is kind of an oddball. I don't think this should stop you from using it if you really love it, but it was one of the first thoughts that came to my mind and it is very popular especially since her character just appeared in the recent movie. Just thought you should be aware of this, but I really do like it and maybe not everyone else in the world is as big a geek as me!

Just lurking, but thought I'd reply to this one. Personally, I think the name is adorable. I actually know a Luna, though. She's one of my college students and absolutely hates the name and insists on being called by her middle name thats a bit more traditional. Everyone's different, though. Just thought I'd throw that in.

If you want an honest opinion, I don't like the name. Luna means the moon. This is also associated with crazy behavior - "looney".

I want to like this name, I really do. But I can't, b/c all I can think of is how kids will tease her. I'm sorry!

I have to agree with some of pp's - Luna means moon and is often associated with being "looney" - I can almost hear now someone deciding to call her Lunatic - sorry - I think using this name for a child would be downright cruel

Luna is the name of a company near me (chicago) so anyone who has lived here the last 3-5 years know the Luna jingle. For that reason alone I would avoid it, but Luna Lovegood is also a major player in the Harry Potter series. I have always liked her character in the books, and still do, but you would be dealing with that association for a while.

I love it. I don't think I would have the guts to use it because it is pretty unusual, but I certainly love hearing it and I'm sure even those who dislike the name would have to appreciate its unique, yet not made up, spunky style.

First I think of "Bear in the Big Blue House" - a kid's show. The moon is named Luna (obviously). I also know someone whose dog is named Luna, so personally I couldn't name my child that.
I don't really dislike the name for a child, but she will inevitably hear "Luna the Lunatic" type stuff, but most names lend themselves to a teasing nickname in some way.

So I guess I'm on the fence about it.

I like it but wouldn't use it for the reasons previous posters have mentioned. Is it the sound of the name that you like best, or the meaning, or something else? If it's the meaning, there are lots of names that mean or relate to the moon, such as Selene/Selena/Selina, Chandra, and Artemis. (There are several baby-name websites that allow one to search by meaning, so I'm sure you would find many more.)
