Hello! Im 25 and 5 months pregnant with my first child. This is my first post on Ivillage.
Here is my question....
The father and I have decided on the first name Olivia for our little girl; all of my friends like it including my mother but some of my older friends say the name reminds them of an old lady and that im setting my child up for failure by giving her such an "old lady name" What do you guys think of that name?? I think its pretty. I know its my child and i can name her what i want but just curious as to what others think...

Olivia has been in the top 10 most popular girls names in this country for 5 years and was ranked #5 last year (15,453 born in the US). I don't think it is considered at all and "old lady" name any more, more that a very very popular little girls name. It is not at all like naming her Mildred. If you love it, use it.

Very pretty name.

The "older" people probably don't realized that "old lady names" are in high fashion now. Such as Abigail, Isabelle, Evelyn, Grace, Amelia and Olivia.

Good luck

As the pps already mentioned, Olivia has been in the top ten for girls for years now. In fact, the majority of the expectant couples in our birthing class over five years ago were planning on naming their daughters Olivia, so it's probably even more popular regionally (top one or two I'd guess, right up there with Sophia, at least for that area). So you might get the "old lady" comments from people that aren't that up-to-date on current naming trends (as you mentioned, your older friends were the ones making these comments, so it makes sense), but anyone that is expecting or has a young child has most likely seen/heard the name dozens of times on the playground, in birth announcements, on a class list, etc. As long as popularity's not an issue, I definitely wouldn't worry about the old-fashioned remarks. All the other little Olivias certainly make the name "now," KWIM?

Olivia is a very pretty name!!! People told me that Emily sounded old when I was pregnant with my daughter, and it turned out to be very popular.

Olivia is a lovely name, and getting popular. Definitely not an old lady name. One of my friends named her DD Olivia May, which I just love.

As the others have pointed out, Olivia is VERY popular right now and definitely is not considered to be an "old lady" name.

If you were looking for something more unique and didn't realize how popular it is, you might want to consider a few more options. But I love Olivia despite its popularity. I think it's beautiful.

I'm in total agreement with what the others have said. I think it's a pretty and classic name. Because it's trendy right now, it will totally fit in and will never be seen as "old lady." However, I would never use it because of its popularity.
