I knew a man who if he was alive today would have been about 100 yrs old named Orion. Never really cared for it but maybe it was because of the association. It would take a while to grow on me. Orion kinda looks like Onion. I'm sorry. I'm sure that it would grow on me.

I laughed out loud when I read your message that Orion kind of looks like Onion. What is so funny about it is that when I read it to myself, I pronounced it "O-ny-on", which rhymes with Orion. Only when I read it out loud to my husband did I realize it actually said onion. And I just cracked up. So did he. Anyway, thanks for your input. That is one I hadn't yet heard.

That was so funny! I got a good chuckle out of your story. I'm sorry if I ruined this name in any way for you. It is a good name and like I said I knew a wonderful older man named Orion. Maybe no one else would see ONION! Thanks for the laugh!!!!!

No, don't worry, you didn't ruin the name for me. If my stepmom can tell me she hates it, and that she will not get used to it but just have to accept it, and my dad can continually ask us if we are really serious about that name, then nothing a stranger could say could possibly ruin it for me. I just thought it would be fun to get an idea of what the general public thinks about the name so I can know what he will be dealing with his whole life... plus it's hard to know what people really think - of course my friends are going to say they like it, and I just wanted some honest opinions. Looks like about 25% of people think its too weird, but that is a small enough number for me so far. Orion thomas it is!! =)

My friend's sister named her baby boy Orion about eight years ago, but I haven't heard it anywhere else. I have to say that I thought it was a little weird at the time, but it has grown on me. I can certainly see the appeal of the mythological hunter and the constellation named after him. I also like that it leaves open the option of Ryan as a nn if he ever thinks that Orion is "too weird."

I think Orion Thomas sounds great! Not one that I would use personally, but it's a cool, strong name, IMO.

My third son is Orion Jacob. I love the name. I actually get more flak from most my family for his middle name than his his first, as it is so popular, but he was named after a grandfather, so what can you do? I will tell you that people in doctor's offices and such will say OR-ee-un. I don't get that at all, and that caught me by surprise the first few times, but it has happened quite a bit now. And of course most strangers will think his name is Ryan when you say it.

When I was naming my son, I got pretty negative feedback from this board, so it looks like it is gaining a little more acceptance now.

I love the name too - I also like your other 2 son's names - especially Griffin. Both are very original and strong sounding. My husband is Tom and brothers all have names like Mike, James, Jonathan, etc... All are wonderful classic names, but I wanted something different. And with different comes some negativity. Thanks for the encouragement!
