What do you think of Nya

My husband loves the name Nya (we are having a girl) and I think it is beautiful too. The problem though is that we have a nephew who is 11 years old named Noah. He lives 3 hours away. Do you think the names are too similar? I'm not sure if we should use it. We don't have many other ideas and only 2 1/2 months to go. We'd like to use the name Judith for a middle name (named after his grandmother). We prefer names that are not in the top 20 and that are not gender neutral. Also, our last name ends in "in" so many names do not sound right.

Any suggestions?

I like Nya, and don't think you need to worry about a cousin named Noah. If it's your favorite name, use it.

Very cute. If Noah were a brother I would say no way, but a cousin - definitely use it. Especially since he's not super close so it's not like they'll be playing together every day.

I like the sound of Nya, but there's something about the spelling that looks odd to me. I think it goes well with Judith as a mn, and I don't think it matters that it's similar to Noah. I think it would be different if it was a sibling or something, but since he is a nephew and is several hours away so less likely to be with her very much, I don't think it's too confusing.

Can I ask where you guys got that name?

Nya has a very pretty sound to it- I'm just not to crazy about the spelling. Maybe Naya? Niya? Naia?

I don't know "Nya" looks like there is a letter missing, or maybe it just looks that way to my eyes.

Best of luck, whatever you decide! :-)

That's EXACTLY what I thought too. I think Naya would confuse the pronounciation to a long A sound rather than the I sound I'm imagining is pronounced, but I like Naia.

We actually heard someone calling their daughter Nya and we immediately liked the sound of it. We were in a grocery store. Not sure on the spelling yet as some of the other responders thought it looked odd.

I like it!!! I think there is less confusion in spelling it that way as well. I wouldn't worry about the cousin's name being Noah. They are not siblings.

Good luck with your decision.

"I think Naya would confuse the pronounciation to a long A sound rather than the I sound I'm imagining is pronounced"

I don't think it would do that because I think people would think Maya with an N - I think Naya is a beautiful name (don't worry about a cousin named Noah).
I agree though it looks like with Nya that there is a letter missing.
Good Luck!

Are you pronouncing it NEE-ah or NY-ah? Either way, to me it looks like there is a letter missing.

If you are going for NEE-ah, how about Nia? Behindthename.com lists two origins; Welsh and African.

If you are going for NY-ah, how about Naya or Naia?

I know a little girl by the same name, but hers is spelled Nyah (rhymes with Maya as in Angelou). I think it can also be pronounced "n-yah", but I like the other pronunciation better. I think Nia is pronounced "knee-a".

That said, I like both.
