what do you think of these names? Favourites? Thoughts? I want a strong name, I like names that have s/x/z in them, names like Alexis and Zara that are strong and elegant but not classically girly.
Raven, Jynx, Nyx, Lupe (loo-PAY), Amyah, Zvesda, Amaryllis (ammaRILLiss), Artemis, Serenity, Luck, Zephyra

I like Amyah out of your choices. I see you have Artemis on your list for a girl, I could be way wrong here, but I always associated that name with boys. What is the meaning of it?

Good Luck!

The only one I can stand at all is Raven. I really like Alexis though. Was that not on the list? I couldn't tell because it was earlier in the post. What about Alexia or Alexa? I might like Amyah, it looks nice, but I'm not exactly sure how to pronounce it. The others are nms at all.

Artemis is the greek goddess of the moon and hunting, the sister of the sun god Apollo. Definitly a girls name! Diana is the Roman equivalent.

I agree, most of those are kinda "out there". I would go with Alexa if that's an option. You could call her Lexi for a nickname if you want. You don't want to go with something too different or she'll be repeating her name to everyone she meets when she's old enough. I hope this helps! Good luck.

My favorites of your names were Raven, Artemis and Zephyra for some reason although it's kind of nms. IMO, I really don't like Jynx (sounds like a mistake or a hex), Nyx (as in 'nix on that idea') or Luck. Serenity is okay and pretty well-established as a name. Amyah is unusual. People will probably have a hard time pronouncing it--same with Zvesda and Lupé (as opposed to the traditional LUpe). Amaryllis is just too flowery for me (no pun intended). According to the dictionary, the name Amaryllis is used in classical pastoral poetry as a conventional name for a shepherdess. Also reminds me of a girl I went to high school with, Jherylris. No one ever seemed to say her name right. I can't even remember how to say it right. Amaryllis, on the other hand, is a popular enough flower that people will probably be able to say it right. I prefer Diana to Artemis, but Diana's also my mom's name. Ziana, maybe?

Of course, it's your baby. Our opinions don't have to really mean anything to you. If you decide you love one name that no one else does, it's your choice.

Some of them I don't know how to pronouce from the spelling! Jynx reminds me of "bad luck". None of them are really my personal style, but Amyah looks pretty (pronounced like it is spelled? am-yah?).

I absolutely adore Artemis on a girl, quite like Amaryllis & Lupe. But Lupe only works if you're Hispanic or live in a largely Hispanic neighborhood. Otherwise she'll end up nicknamed Loopy. I'd use the spelling Artemas on a boy. (I've known two Artemas boys/men and I find the name, spelled that way; completely dashing!)Artemis is the girls spelling to me, and that is definitely my favorite off your list!

Raven seems rather plain to me these days. Maybe it's because I'm Wiccan, but Raven is a name I hear every day within my circles and, while it was fresh and cutting edge twenty years ago, it's not anymore. Nothing about Raven stands out, to me. Jinx & Nyx both have negative connotations to me (jinx = bad luck or a curse; Nyx = a nasty water faerie.)
Zvesda is a manufacturer of ejection seats with multiple military contracts, but I'll admit it sounds very pretty. I just think the average Yank'll have problems pronouncing it.

A few other suggestions:

I suppose Beatrix would be too common for you? I think it's a lovely name that hasn't been anywhere near the top 1000 since 1883, when it ranked 760; according to SSA.

Erzsébet is the Hungarian form of Elisabeth/Elizabeth, and while Elisabeth/Elizabeth is fairly common, Erzsébet isn't at all common. It's pronounced as it looks: ER-zhay-bet.

Xanthe meaning yellow or fair is a recognisable but uncommon name. Zan-thee is how it's pronounced.

And I have two beloved Z names on my list that are uncommon in the extreme but are verifiable names:

Zenobia meaning 'life of Zeus', the name of a third century Queen and is pronounced as it looks: ze-NO-bee-a. I think it's utterly gorgeous!

And my absolute favorite, which will be the first middle name of my scond daughter (should I ever have one):

Zuleika, meaning 'brilliant beauty' in Persian. It's presumably the name of the wife of the Biblical Potipfar and shows up in quite a number of old poems & stories. Pronounced: zoo-LAY-ka. Zuleika is beyond gorgeous to me and outranks every name I listed here. All of them are great names, I just think Zuleika's the best of all of them. Different, but definitely not heard often!

Amaryllis is pretty, just like the flower.
