The "d" in front is referred to as two things...either "dear" or "darling." I think "dear" is what most of the cl's would tell you.

So DH...is dear husband or darling husband.

I just assumed it stood for "dear" but my question is - who 1st decided to refer to them as "dear"?? Mine aren't always so dear around here!! How 'bout just a big H, W, S or D???

Well, the 'D', besides standing for 'dear' or 'darling' could also stand for 'darned' or 'dam*ed' It's not really a big deal, use them if you want, people will usually know what you mean. Or don't use them. It's more straightforward then. :)
