Is there anything other than Ellen that the name Ellie could be short for? Also, what are your opinions on the name? What type of person do you picture when you hear the name Ellie?

Thanks!!

Ellie is short for virtually any name starting with El-. That includes Elena, Elizabeth, Eleanor, Ella, Ellery, etc. I've also seen it used twice as a nn for names ending in -ella, once for Gabriela and once for Isabella.

I think Ellie is a cute and popular nickname. There are so many Ellies, I don't really get a clear image when I hear the name, except for sweet and young.

My niece is named Ellery (actually a boy's name but sounds feminine) and my sister calls her Elly. Very sweet!

When I think of Ellie, I think of a girl who's not afraid to get her boots dirty. I think it is a very popular name...not quite a Jennifer or Michelle from my generation, but more like a Lisa or Angie.

Eleri, with this spelling, is actually a feminine name. Just thought your niece might one day like to know. ;)

The nn Ellie is very sweet and feminine, although it is getting popular. There have already been a lot of ideas listed, so I will just say that my favourite is Elena nn Ellie (or Lainey).

Ellie doesn't have to be short for anything, I know an Ellie who is JUST Ellie. I also know Elinore who is Ellie, it could be for Elizabeth, Isabelle, Ambrielle (am-bre-elle), or many others. I think it's a very spunky and cheerful name, very cute and fits well into life, not just childhood.

It could be short for Elliot, which is good for a girl in my opinion. I would not want a son named Ellie.
