what we could have been named

Hey,
I've noticed a lot of people coming up with different names, before they finally settle on a certain one. I think its actually everyone that does this lol. The funny thing is tho, some names parents love are really bad! my mom wanted to name me Ariadna. Hearing it now, makes me think of spiders (arachnia) Luckily my dad suggested Elizabeth, and she liked that one. My DF's parents wanted to name him Erskine. It's a family name, but luckily his sister pointed out that he would get teased incredibly at school being named Erskine, and they decided on Gregory.
I don't mean to upset anyone with this, i just think its funny. to think of what we could have been named :)

I love this topic. My friends and I have all discussed this -- what names our parents almost named us, what we would have been named if we were the opposite gender, etc.
The only name my parents really considered for me before they settled on Meredith Anne was Hannah. My mom loved it, but my dad hated it and vetoed it. He said she could name me anything BUT Hannah, so Meredith Anne it was.
But EVERYONE was convinced I was a boy (I still have a box of baby t-shirts that say "number one son" and blue rattles and whatnot) so they were much more concerned about a boy name. Had I been a boy, I would have been Patrick Michael. I'm Irish on both sides, so Patrick was one they agreed on easily and Michael is my father's middle name (but the name that he goes by). I love the name Patrick and would consider using it for a future son. It's sort of a neat personal connection.
My parents considered Kelly, but then my dad had a student with that name, so he didn't like it anymore. Nothing wrong with Kelly, but I'm happy they went with Stephanie.
For my brother, they considered Anthony, but he would have been Tony Taylor, and that was too sing-songy for them, so they went with Jeffrey, nn Jeff. They never considered that Steph and Jeff would rhyme. :-)
Stephanie
I'm a twin and my parents didn't know they were having twins until her c-section and I was out and they were ready to stitch her back up again when they realized there was another in there, lol. They had Debra picked out if I was a girl and Kevin if I was a boy. So they had to come up with another name, so I got named Terra and my twin Debra. Go figure why I wasn't named Debra and my sister Terra, but anyhow. Unless, they got us mixed up, lol.
Terra.
This is funny, because I asked my mom about this once (since they didn't find out when pregnant with my sister or me, but did for my brother). She said the only name she ever really considered was Kelli, and that she just knew that was my name. Guess if I was a boy I would have been Kelly? LOL
They didn't have any names they liked for my sister, but weren't allowed to leave the hospital without completing her birth certificate (don't think that's still the case, but I guess it was then LOL). They were looking through a baby name book and came across Dara. They both loved it and thought it fit, and it also happened to be the name of my dad's best friend when he was just 4 or 5, so a good association for him too. So Dara she was. ;)
My mom dreamed she'd had a boy and named him Stephen when she was pregnant with my brother, and sure enough, he was a boy and they did name him Stephen. ;)
So I guess my parents are in the minority here, having only considered one name for each child and then stuck with it (I know we've considered quite a few for our girls LOL).

My mom actually considered changing my name after I was born. She wanted to change my name to Joy because I was such a good baby compared to my older sister lol. But she decided to stick with Suzanne which Im glad she did. There is also like a pattern with me and my two sisters. My older sister is Stasia Suzanne, Im Suzanne Elizabeth, and my younger sister is Elizabeth Kate. Then my brother is Michael Jeffrey and my dads name is Jeffrey, and if Elizabeth was a boy she would of been Ryan Michael (so its like the opposite of us girls). So she decided to stick with Suzanne so that she could do that pattern thing, which I actually really like.
Fun topic! I'm actually Rachael Erin (I go by Erin online, just for kicks), and I know my parents considered both Hannah and Laurel for me. My brother is Michael Brian, and they considered Seth for him; I'm not sure what else. It's funny how matchy our names ended up being. I think Laurel and Seth would have been really cool.

If I was a boy, I was going to be John Francis after my dad. (There are six girls in my family, all of us were going to be John Francis! LOL!) They also considered naming me Jane, Lois or Sheila. Sheila is the only of those names that I would have like to have had.
Mary
My Mom had my name picked out since she was a little girl. Her middle name is Christine but my grandfather spelled it incorrectly on her birth certificate, so it actually read as "Christen". My Mom always loved that pronuniciation and decided to name her daughter Kristen, however when the late 70's rolled around the name became more popular because of some soap opera character and she almost changed her mind and named me Carrie. I'm glad she stuck with plan A in the end. I've always liked my name.
If I were a boy I would have been Ryan.
