Where can I find the top names just for my area or state? There are quite a few places that show the top names in general but I'm curious about just my area.
If you go to the SSA website -- http://www.ssa.gov/OACT/babynames/ -- and scroll down, in the left collumn, there is a link that says, "Popular Names by State". There you can see the top 100 names for each state for every year since 1960.
I don't know of any place where you can search by region, but if you are interested in a large area (ie New England or the South) you could look not only at your state but also surrounding state. If you're looking for a smaller area (like your city or county) you could try browsing Web Nursery -- http://www.growingfamily.com/webnursery/ --for hospitals in your area. You can search by city name or area code and there will be a link to all the participating hospitals in your area. This is much less scientific -- it's not compiled statistics, just birth announcements. So you'll have to sort through them on your own. But if you monitor them every couple of weeks (or you obsessively sit and do it for hours and hours one day ) you'll probably get a good idea of what names are coming up again and again.
you can get the top 100 names per state at

Here are the top 100 names for the state of California in 2005 (from the SSA's site).

Not sure if Sacramento lists the most popular names for the city, but you could try looking at local government sites. You might get lucky. ;)
