Which "Anna" name do you like best?
| Thu, 05-10-2007 - 9:50am |
Forget the trends in this case, especially since I don't know anyone with the following names. I don't like the names "Anne" or "Ana" on their own because they are so plain, yet I really LOVE any name that has that sound in it. So, which "Anna" name(s) do you like best? Also, please feel free to suggest more that I haven't thought of.
Anabelle
Anabella
Hannah
Analiese (I think this is my personal favorite aside from Anabelle, but my last name starts with an S...will it run together?)
Brianna
Gianna
Lilianna
Luciana

It would partly depend on if you want the "Anna" or "ah-na" sound with many of these, since you have quite a few spellings that would change the pronunciation.
For example, I like Annabel, rather than Anabelle/a (both visually and for the Anna rather than ah-na pronunciation), and Liliana (ah-na) rather than Lilianna, conversely. ;) Along those same lines, I love Gianna if it's pronounced correctly, but if it would be said with an "ann-a" ending I don't care for it at all. Anneliese is also nice, but I prefer the German/Dutch spelling here. The Ana- beginning makes it seem you either wanted to somehow encourage the proper "ah-ne" beginning sound by creating an alternate spelling or perhaps desired to make the name appear Spanish (if you DO have Spanish heritage, I sort of understand that, but if not it seems an odd thing to do, KWIM?).
I also like Luciana, as is. ;)

Thanks for all of your opinions, I love constructive criticism bc I don't like to settle and I love to hear what everyone thinks.
I just wanted to let everyone know though that every baby book I have lists Annelise/Analiese/Anneliese as all correct German ways of spelling the name and my DH's grandmother is German and says they are all correct as well. It's so confusing because everyone hears/thinks something different. Any insight?
That being said and with all of your criticism, I do like the other spellings better than the original ones I wrote in my first post:
Annabel
Annelise/Anneliese
So thank you for pointing all of these things out!
I think my favorites from this list are Annabel, Annelise (whichever spelling, they're all pretty) and Luciana.

I believe the discrepancy is that all ARE forms of Anneliese (though to be honest, I've never seen any Ana- spellings myself), but translations suited to different cultures/languages. Like how you might find Maire, Mairi, Marie and Mhairi listed as equally valid forms of Mary, but that doesn't mean they all share the same pronunciation or language of origin. They're translated forms, and none are said exactly like Mary (they're MOI-ra, MA-ree, ma-REE and VA-ree). So while they're all forms of Mary, you couldn't take the Irish Maire and equate it with a French origin simply because they're all valid spellings of the same name. You'd want to use Marie, KWIM? ;)
Behind the Name is a fairly accurate site (whereas baby name books are notoriously INaccurate ), so to use theirs as an example:

Like I said, no Ana- beginning forms mentioned, but since Ana, Anabel, etc. are generally considered Spanish forms, I'd assume that would be the intent of an "Analiese" spelling. That, or simply a created spelling meant to emphasize that Anne- is supposed to be pronounced "ah-ne" rather than like the names Anne or Anna would be said in English, KWIM? The double-Ns are confusing to many unfamiliar with the name. ;)
I quite like your favorites -- Annabel, Annelise/Anneliese and Luciana -- btw.

Thanks, Mommyagain!! I will have to use behindthename.com more often ... sounds like a really useful site!
Since you're so good at this, do you have any middle name suggestions for Annabel? Family middle names are Mae, Jo, Ann (obviously can't use that), Marie (don't want to use this at all.....very old to me especially paired with an "Anna" name), etc.
My personal favorite family name is Mae, but does the name Annabel Mae sound too "country"?
Completely forgot you'd asked about mns. ;) Oddly enough, I don't hear "Anna + Belle" with Annabel. I know that isn't clear (obviously I know how the name sounds LOL), but knowing it's not actually a combination of those two separate names, it doesn't seem quite as long or involved to my ear ... which is I think what you're getting at with the difficulty in pairing it with a

I think Mae is a very pretty, simple name. My first thoughts when I hear it are of Mae West, the actress/singer who was big in the '30s. I love her, and I love the name! Paired with Annabel, though, I can see how you might be concerned about it sounding "country." For myself, I would pair it with Marilyn (Marilyn Mae) to honour two of my favourite Old Hollywood blondes.
I think Anneliese Mae (whichever spelling you prefer for Anneliese; this one is my favourite) is lovely!
Ohhh I love the name Claire...I wasn't sure if Annabel Claire was too much together when I thought of it awhile back, but now that I see it written out, it's really beautiful. So is Annabel Maeve.
Thanks so much for all of the help! ;)
