Which names are future up and comers?

I was just reading a post on the other name board from a woman who is upset because the names she picked as unique for her kids, are now quickly climbing the ranks. (My mom said the same thing about both my and my sister's names.) I guess the post really struck me because I intend to use one of the names that she was complaining about - Eliana. I am not going to go into why we picked it, but suffice it to say it is perfect for us! But now I am worrying. It is ranked around 300 now, but I would also probably be upset if it suddenly skyrocketed to the top of the charts.

So my question is, I know that no one knows for sure, but some of you ladies seem to know a lot more about name trends than I do, so do you have any thoughts on which names are going to be the next Emma, and Hannah? Boys or Girls, I just thought it would be interesting to see a list of which names, or trends in names you think are going to 'hit' next.

I think Eliana is getting popular, I know 2 of them...I do think it's pretty however.

As far as naming trends...I think you'll just see the older names keep making a comeback like that have been.

Well, I've been seeing lots of posts asking about these names:
Girls: Beatrice/Beatrix, Alice, Anneliese (and all of it's mutiple spellings), Cadence, Stella, Ruby & Eva (on the heels of Ava). Josephine's an up & comer too (despite what some folks are saying) but it's moving slowly for now.. up 16 places just in the last year. Look at the numbers per year for the last 15 years:

2004 - 242 (up 16)
2003 - 258 (up 6)
2002 - 264 (up 11)
2001 - 275 (up 13)
2000 - 288 (up 23)
1999 - 311 (up 35)
1998 - 346 (up 7)
1997 - 353 (up 18)
1996 - 371 (up 6)
1995 - 377 (up 14)
1994 - 391 (up 37)
1993 - 428 (up 2)
1992 - 426 (up 5)
1991 - 421 (up 17)
1990 - 438

Boys:
Asher, definitely. Philip, Ezra, Evan, Abram/Abraham, Rowan, Arthur, Felix and I'm starting to see lots of WYT's about Solomon.

Well I took a few moments to look at the top 300 or so names and their rise in popularity in the last few years. I listed things that are already popular and still moving up, and then big movers that really caught my eye.

It looks like the older classic type names are making a big come back, along with some trendy names:

Lily (and any variation...Lilly, Liliana, Lilliana, Lillian)

Amelia

Ella

Sophia (and any varition...Sofia, Sophie)

Ava

Natalie

Ruby

Lucy

Stella

Bella

Charlotte

Grace

Mia

Chloe

Avery

Riley

Paris

Addison

Layla

Alana

Jayden

Reese

Piper

And sorry, I only searched girls names, as they tend to move a lot more frequently, and you were concerned about your little one's name. That particular name is not moving very quickly, so I wouldn't be too concerned :)

She may be in class with a lot of girls with the NN Ellie (NN for Elizabeth, Gabrielle, Anabelle, Isabelle, Eleanor, etc.), but I bet she'll be the only Eliana. If you don't use a NN and don't mind a lot of Ellies around, I think you'll be fine!!!

Eliana is beautiful!! I have a little Elena myself and I think both names (as well as my other daughter's name, Adrienne) are feminine, beautiful, not too popular, yet not weird. I think you have a winner!

I'll admit, when I read your post at first I was like - hey no fair just because you had kids sooner than me you are allowed to use this name and now I am stealing it. I feel like I did put a lot of effort into choosing

Megan,

Point 1, you look like my sister (actually just called Evan my oldest (whose name now, 11 years later, is also an up-and-comer LOL) in and showed him your siggy...

LOL - now you are cracking me up!

It seems I look like a lot of people because people are always telling me I look familiar.

I am fresh out of energy to be funny, but yes, it took us

I know exactly what you mean. I know one little girl named Eliana, but she is the only one. I have an Ella and it is becoming very popular...she will be 3 in July. The name Sophie and all it's versions...Sophia, etc...is very popular along with Ava, etc. I think you just have to go with your gut and if it becomes popular ...it probably won't be in your "year " so to speak. I just wanted to tell you that I understand completely where you are coming from. At least you are aware of the possibility that the name could start to zip up the charts--my DD's name is already there. Ugh.
When I had her five years ago I didn't know any other kids really--just a few neices and nephews. I had no idea what names were ultra popular and I hadn't found this baby naming page or any others yet.
So I did it the old-fashioned way. My Dh and I chose a name that we loved the sound of and that had very special meaning to us. We wanted a nature name with some connection to family. So we went with LILY! My mother's name means Lily and we loved the sweet sound of it.
So did everyone else apparently. I still only know of one other real-life Lily (my cousin, of all people, named his DD Lily a year after my Lily was born--arg!) but I hear of the name on this board and through friends and family.
As much as I love that name, we wouldn't have chosen it had we known it would rise up the charts like it has. It drives me crazy. I was really trying for something a little different.
I'm just really hoping that it starts to lose its appeal and drop off the charts again to make room for other up-and-comers.

Anyone gonna toss me a bone and say that they think Lily might drop off a bit??? Please!!!

Anyway, Eliana is a gorgeous name and it's still high enough in the charts that I wouldn't be too scared of its popularity--unless you are going to call her Ellie, which is everywhere.

Good luck!
Amy
