PERSONAL PREFERENCE! That is all that it is. Some people like NN, and others don't. I personally will suggest a NN whenever I give suggestions on here. That doesn't mean that the NN HAS to be used, just an idea if the formal name is too long. But who cares, if you ask for suggestions and you don't want to use the NN, ignore it, don't complain about it. These ladies put alot of time in giving suggestions, looking up origins, meanings, and yes even NN. I am not trying to sound rude at all, and I hope you don't take it that way, but if you don't like it just leave it be.
It is no different than calling your kid Monkey, Little Bug, Boo-Boo, or something that has NOTHING to go with the name at all. You certainly wouldn't ask us to put Monkey Johnson on the birth certificate. NN are pet names, personal names. I agree with whoever said that Cammie is cute for a little girl, but if she becomes president Camille would be taken more serious. Just because we call her Cammie for "X" amount of years doesn't mean that will stick forever. That is why I choose to give a name I love and spice it up with a cute and spunky NN.
HAPPY NAMING!!!!!!!!!! : )
I agree with the others that my reasoning for naming my dd Margaret when I intend on calling her Meg was that I want her to have a formal name. Margaret is a family name and I despise the nn Maggie (no offense to those who like it, it's just nms).
Personally I prefer formal names and people chosing their own nicknames. That is just me. My brother's name is Robert but everyone calls him Duke. His dad loved John Wayne and called him "The Duke" ever since birth. He never would have suggested naming him Duke because he didn't think of it until my brother was born (plus my mom would never have gone for it). I don't like NN used for the sake of NN's. Like people call me Aim just for the sake of a nickname. It doesn't have anything to do with an intimit attachment. Where as my mother ALWAYS calls me "munchkin" and will until I am 80. She would have never named me Munchkin Elizabeth Erich even though she never calls me Aimee unless I am in trouble. She even yells it in the store to my embarrasment. In fact no one in my family calls me Aimee although it is a perfectly nice name. My dad calls me Aimma my sister calls me Little One, my oldest brother calls me Amos and my other brother calls me Famous (as in Famous Amos my childhood nickname) or Scooter. None of those names would be appropriate for a birth certificate. I was called Amos all through my childhood by everyone but I wouldn't imagine ever formerly naming a girl Amos.
The people that call my by my formal name are people who don't know me personally.
