I think Phyllis, Joyce and Judith have potential for a comeback. Not sure about the others, but it's hard to predict.

How about these?

Esther
Hilda
Deborah
Barbara
Gladys
Mildred
Wanda

I've found in general that it takes three to four generations to make a name feel fresh & usable again. Any sooner than that and we still have memories of an old aunt (or grandma) so & so.

So, out of all of these, I think a few of them have potential for a sooner comeback as their nicknames have a modern sound:

Gloria - Glory (I can see this if the patriotic craze sticks around for another year or so. I already know two little Gloriana/Glorys who are adorable!) Gloria's not that much of a stretch. As soon as people forget Gloria Bunker, Gloria's good to go again.

Phyllis - With a nickname of Lyssa (or Lissa) Phyllis has a modern ring to it, to me. I know one 30 year old Phillis, who goes by Lissa and she's wonderful!

Agnes - has been on my favorite list forver, I adore the gentle sound of it, think it's simple, sweet and I love the potential for a Nessa!

Esther - I already know a little Esther and she's exotically gorgeous. I think as she gets older, I'll see more Esther's around.

Mildred - may be back soon. Millie's quite cute and it's got a similar feel as a nickname to Tilly for Matilda, which is already back as well as Mattie/Matty for Mattea, which is hot right now.

These two: Deborah & Barbara may take a bit longer since I have contemporaries named both Barbara & Deborah (Debra)(I'm nearing 40 myself) so it may take another three generations for those to truly come back as lots of folks don't even have grandparents with these names yet. Wait til Barbara & Deborah aren't moms but are great grandmas and then you'll see little Barbaras & Deborahs again!

I figure these will probably come back just in time for our grandkids to be named:
Doris
Joyce
Judith
Ethel
Hilda
Wanda
Gladys (although this one may take a bit longer than the others, since "Bewitched" is still around).

Most of them are Grandmas now, one more generation is enough to seperate them from use and make them feel fresh again; or maybe two.

I know of a new baby named Judith.

Another we might never see again is Mildred.

Deborah I don't think is dead yet. My sister's best friend's family gave a slightly modern/jewish twist on it, Devra, which i think could be really nice.

Although there arent too many Judy's around, I can picture Judith coming a little more into the mainstream. My best friend my senior year was a Judy

I forget who said it, but its so true that it takes about 2-3 generations for names to come back. I always loved victorian names, but unfortuantly now their back in style! lol hopefully when DF and i start having to think about that they'll go back down in popularity, or at least not be the top names.

I also think that everyone has different tastes. Another of my sister's names is Flora, a name i never thought i'd hear today. I've also heard that Sadie is making a comeback. Barbara just sounds a little too old for me. I did meet girls my age tho named Dorothy and Janet.
