Would you give your child a name that the meaning isn't that appealing, but you love the name so much that you go ahead and use it?We have a son,Jackson&are considering the name Mallory for our dd due next month, but aren't sure because of the meaning:unlucky. Please,be honest. Our backup name is Delaney. The mn is Claire..Thanks a bundle.

I really like the name Mallory but maybe you should reconsider just because you already know and are inevitably going to think about that meaning. Honestly, I like Delaney better. What does it mean?

Really, are you going to think of the *meaning* of her name every time you speak her name??? I don't think so. How important is the meaning in the long run? How many people do you know that will say to her when she is older, "Mallory?! Your name means this......" I highly doubt that in the scheme of things, that it matters all that much. If you love the name, than stick with it!

Absolutely. For me, the meaning of a name is not a very important factor. If a name happens to have some special meaning, that is great. But I would never choose or rule out a name based on its meaning. The vast majority of the people in the world will have no idea what your child's name means.

Absolutely. I don't think the meaning of her name will come up that often. Plus, Mallory is a beautiful name -- common enough to be "known" but not overused. I think Delaney is cute, too, but I prefer Mallory.

JMHO...

Hi! My name is Leslie and my boyfriends name is Kevin. On 2/4/05 I gave birth to our beautiful little girl. We named her Kendall Morgan. I didn't even look it up to see what it meant, but now I've found out that Kendall means "valley of the river kent" and Morgan means "the edge of the sea". Mallory was a contendor in naming Kendall and had we have used it we would have never known it meant unlucky. So I say the meaning means nothing and GO WITH MALLORY!!!!!!!

lol the internet is such a great thing...

Mallory- Old German- army counselor
Mallory- French- Mailed

from what i found, it is actually Malory which means "unlucky". I think it is a beautiful name tho, and i don't think the meaning will actually mean anything once she's actually there. my sister's best friend is named Mallory, lol she doesnt seem to have bad luck, she's actually an amazing volleyball player who got a scholarship to college :) thought that might help!

How often will you need to tell people what the name means? Is it that important? I don't think so.

I'd go with Delaney (I have this one picked for a girl name for us too). I am the type of person who would always have that meaning in the back of my mind and wouldn't want that negativity associated with my child's name.
Example: We like the name Damian for a boy but hubby says that the name has something to do with the son of satan or something like that. Therefore, that is sooooo off my list!

Good Luck!

If you love it, use it. Besides what better than a precious DD to change the meaning of the name in your eyes.
