Would you give your DD a name very similar to your own name?

  • Mother's name is Julienne (Julie)
  • Considering either Julia or Juliana

  • No

I've thought about this. I love the name Alice, but I feel I can't use it because my name is Alison. For me, I just don't like the idea of giving my daughter such a similar name when there are so many unrelated names that I love.

Admittedly, I don't like using family names in general, so it's not surprising that having my own personal namesake is outside my comfort zone.

kids are named after their father all of the time - I love the idea of a mother and daughter sharing a name. Very sweet.

Good luck,

I can see naming her for her mother (naming her Julienne) but not something close. That just seems silly without the signficance of naming her for her mother.

I think it's nice. It seems a little weird to us these days, but I think it used to be pretty common. In my family, there are several branches with mothers and daughters with the same name in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Like a previous poster said, men do it all the time.

I also like the idea of using a variation, so there's less confusion about who's who.

I voted "No," but only because I know how confusing/annoying it can be to have two people with the same or similar names in one household. To be fair, I feel the same way about naming a boy after the father, so it's not a gender issue to me.

However, if you WANT to name her after youself, I think using a variation like Julia or Juliana is a nice way to do so without giving her the same exact name. So if that were your reasoning, I'd change my vote to yes. I just assumed from your wording that you simply liked the name but worried it was too similar to your own.
