My best friend is expecting in the beginning of June, and besides being COMPLETELY unprepared, (She hasn't even bought a crib or carseat yet!) And after getting on my nerves about the whole thing by getting pregnant by a loser whom she married to young and who does drugs and cheats on her, she was going to keep the legacy alive by naming their son after this fine specimen of a man. This was a decision I knew she would regret, because, chances are, they are not going to live happily ever after. I hate to sound mean about all of it, but she's my best friend and I love her so it's frustrating to watch her run her life in the ground. ANYWAY, every alternative name I gave her couldn't compare to the baby being a jr. But, she picked my daughter up from school for me one day and there is a little boy named Gavyn in her class. She fell in love with the name, and so, he will be a Gavyn, not a Jr.!! I am so excited and just to keep it going, we have gotten in the habit of saying Gavyn instead of "the baby". I am so happy!

That's great, I love Gavin! But please, please suggest to her that she should use the proper spelling- Gavin (not Gavyn). The random "y" in there just looks odd and makes it feminine looking and misspelled. Gavin is a wonderful name though.

Gavin is a wonderful name. I went to high school with a gorgeous Australian named Gavin--he was my lab partner, and I almost failed the class because I couldn't concentrate! So, needless to say, I always think of it as handsome and manly name. :) ITA with Nikki about the Gavyn spelling. Gavyn looks like Jordyn, Emersyn, and Aydyn...a traditionally masculine name that parents tried to "frilly up" with the letter y and make more girlish. The random y thing for girls doesn't show any signs of going away, so Gavyn could lead to some gender confusion in the future. It's something to keep in mind, and you might want to gently suggest it to your friend.

I totally agree with both of you. I prefer the i spelling too. The y does seem a bit feminine. I will suggest it! Thanks!

since you seem to have a little influence here - try to convince her to spell it Gavin, regardless of how the one in your little girl's class is spelled
