hi all! been a loonnnng time since i've been here---prolly about two years since before our first pg. DD is now 11 mo old and we're TTC#2 and working on names. DD is Anastazia Lukas Cannova (nn Zia) Anastazia is pronounced with soft AH's not Eh's (ahhh-nahh-stahhh'-zziuh). She is named after her grandmom, great grandma and great-great grandma.

Here are the names we are considering so far:

Boy (DH's fave boy name is Jack--but it doesnt work with a hard C last name, so he wants something similarly short and strong)

Rocco Stephen
Rocco Amadeo
Brando Thoreau

Girl
Artemesia Zofia (prolly nn ZOfi, cause i cant think of any nn's for Artemesia. "arty" is not acceptable. Temi might do--not sure. any suggestions? )
Constanza Zofia (nn either Stanzi (stahhn'zee) or Zofi or maybe CC)(again, pronounced with soft ahh's)
Zofia Constanza (nn Zofi)

any ideas to help us narrow them down?

tia!

Congratulations, and good luck! Anastasia is one of my favorite names, and although I'm not sure how I feel about spelling it with a Z, I can see why you did because of her nickname. Is Cannova the last name?

I'm not particularly crazy about the name Rocco--not because of any real objection to the name, but just because Madonna named her son that. I'll always think of that when I hear the name. And Brando reminds me of Marlon--which is good in A Streetcar Named Desire way, but not so good when you consider how weird he got when he got older. Although I like the name Jack, I don't think it fits with your last name either, and I think it's too plain alongside Anastazia. I LOVE the name Thoreau, and although I don't dislike Stephen, I think it's too plain, too. Thoreau Amadeo gets my vote (if we're allowed to combine). Also, Zeke is my favorite little boy name--in fact, I intend to have Ezekiel, nicknamed Zeke. It sounds really cute with Zia...Zia and Zeke. SO CUTE! But still strong and masculine.

As for girls, I don't love the name Artemesia, not the least reason for which is the fact that she almost certainly WILL be called Art or Arty. I don't care for Temi, either. If you decide to use it, though, what about Ari as a nickname? My favorite name of yours is Zofia Constanza, but I also like Zofie Artemesia. Whether you name her Zofia or Zofie, though, you could call her Zoe. Either Zofi or Zoe sounds really cute with Zia.

I really would not suggest Artemesia Zofia, nicknamed Zofi. She'll have to correct everyone for her whole life, because everyone will assume that she's called by her first name. Also, although I don't mind Constanza, I hate the nickname Stanzi.

hi and thank you for your thotful response. yes, cannova is the surname. anastazia was given the z in part because her paternal grandma is nn'd sia and we wanted our DD to have her own identity, and my maiden name started with a z.

ITA regarding the madonna/rocco thang--rocco has the same meaning as my DH's name, Peter and its one of the few names he loves. Stephen is my dad, brother and a fave cousin. so while i agree that it's plain and doesnt dazzle, it has a lot of meaning for us. i think its the plainness that i'm trying to get around, because DH would be happy just going with this name combo that we selected from before we knew Zia was a girl.

personally, i also love the name Zeke! i have a feeling it will be a long time before DH agrees to it (not that he has to like it---since he inisted on anastazia, the rest of the kids are mine to name *tee hee* )i do like the combination of Thoreau Amadeo---but i prefer it in its reverse Amadeo Thoreau.

Artemesia I like for its botanical meaning--and that it was used to make absinthe--and that an Artemesia was the first female painter of the rennaissance to be accepted to study with the men.( I think i'd name a daughter Absinthe if it werent so gothy.) I think it works well with anastazia, which was the reason for using it for a first name, but i understand completely your thots on her needing to explain--and dont disagree. The nickname Ari is a stroke of genius---especially because we're also considering the name Aria, Ari for short. Zofia is a nod to my grandmother--Sophia, which i would use save that its become so popular that i fear it would be lost in trendiness. the Z again relates to my maiden name. i think Zia and Zofi would be just so gosh darn CUTE together!

you've given me a lot to think about---thank you so much, again, for your responses--
