heard the hb, mfm question...

I got to hear the heartbeat for the first time today 6w4d and it was 133. I'm comfortable with that. My OB said he'd like to have me see the mfm at 14-16 weeks - is this normal? Do they usually wait that long, or does it depend? I'm high risk because I've had 3 pregnancy losses, one third trimester loss last year. Should I ask to see them earlier? or does 14-16 weeks sound normal? thanks!

Sorry it took me so long to respond!! How are you doing?

I would say that sounds fairly normal. I didn't see mine until about 12 weeks, just to plan out when to do the cerclage around 14 weeks and then I saw him fairly regularly from that point on until being released back to my OB at 30 weeks. I think until 12-14 weeks they don't really "do" much anyways to prevent a loss because there isn't much to be done as that is when most miscarriages naturally occur.

Of course, if your concerned you could always call the MFM and see what their thoughts are (unless you need to wait for your OB to refer you).

Thanks, my OB referred me and my appt with the mfm is June 6th, I'll be 15 weeks. I also have to switch OB's pretty soon because they closed the OB dept at the hospital where my OB delivers so he only does prenatal care until whichever OB you are transferring to wants you. He has some OB's that want his patients at 16 weeks and some that don't want them until 32 weeks. He is thinking the one I'm transferring to will want me sometime before 20, but they haven't called me yet to set up that appt with them, so who knows.

I'm such a nervous patient this time, they even fit me in yesterday morning for an u/s so I could see that my lil one is doing ok. Doc said that should get you through for another week or so, right, no worrying for a few days now. I so wish I could stay with him through my whole pregnancy.
