Question about solids
12
Thu, 11-11-2010 - 9:39pm

It's been a LONG time since I started a baby on solids so I have a couple of questions... I know he's only 4 months and that's early but my pediatrician suggested it... not sure why.

1) Noah started rice cereal this week. he's been on it for 3 days and he has yet to poo... usually he poos every day. Any suggestions on how to get things moving?

2) What is the schedule for introducing the different cereals? How long shoould he be on the rice cereal before moving on to the others? And at what point do I start introducing the fruits?

3) Right now Noah eats cereal once a day (usually with his second bottle of the day), when does that increase?

I can't remember how I did it with DD... I don't even know if I followed the guidelines properly if at all. I am so lost!

Oh and one more question, if I give Noah mashed bananas instead of baby food in a jar (I'm planning to make my own baby food I think) do I have to add water to the bananas to dilute them?

Thanks for any and all info and advice! Much appreciated, ladies!

Hope everyone is well :)

I think opinions differ on when to start solids.

Thanks for posting this topic, I'm afraid i can't give any advice, but I am curious to see everyone else's responses.

Thanks for all the info Melissa! I used the website you suggested to relieve Noah's constipation and after a 2oz bottle (1/2 prune-apple Gerber juice, 1/2 water) he pooped almost right away and hasn't stopped yet! He went 4 times yesterday!!! We're going to keep going with the rice cereal but we're taking things slowly and letting Noah call the shots. Sometimes he only eats a couple of spoonfuls before he starts to fuss so we stop. I'm not going to start any other foods for a few more weeks I don't think.

As for fighting the urge to have another baby... I'm letting nature make that decision. Not trying, not (really) preventing. Some days I want another one and other days I don't think I have any more of myself to give!!! Having a baby is a lot of work!!! lol
Glad to hear that Cicely is doing well! Noah is on the slower end of the milestone spectrum but he's getting there!
Take care!

Both of your babies are doing so well. Tj is doing well also but I sometimes wonder if he is behind a bit. He does not roll first of all, he can sit there in our arms or propped up and play with the toys on the mat and he can laugh out loud but no rolling. I just worry sometimes b/c of him being a little early. I actually took TJ off of solids, he was on rice & bananas but his stomach was not tolerating either one so now he is just one formula. I actually think I am going to start back on the rice today and see if he can tolerate it. So nice to hear from both of you! Melissa, I need a picture of cicely it has been a while! Talk to everyone soon!

Noah seems to like the rice cereal. He smiles when I put the bowl down in front of him and he smiles while he's eating but he pushes most of it out... So I really see this as practice for the future because I'm not sure he's getting very much. We have some rice cereal samples which should last us another 2 weeks so once those are done we'll see where we stand and consider moving on to other foods I think. I also would like to wait until closer to 6 months.

Crystal-- Noah rolled from tummy to back a few times when he was about a month old but he hasn't done it since. guess it was a fluke! He holds his head up really well and sits with assistance, stands holding on to my fingers... he coos but very quietly and not a lot. He laughs (if anyone watches The Big Bang Theory I always say he laughs like Sheldon) but has only giggled once or twice. I figure he'll catch up soon enough, he's just moving at his own pace :) I know how hard it is to NOT compare them with other babies, though! Don't stress too much. He'll be fine!

Grains cause constipation in infants because their gut isn't ready or able to digest it yet.

Thanks for all the info.
Actually the constipation cleared up right away and now Noah is pooping better than ever! I'm pretty sure it had to do with the change in diet.

I know I'm a little late on this Sandra, and I didn't get to read everyone's response but here is what we did. We started all the kids around 4mths.
