Ben needs a neuro consult

Well, I knew something was up! The ped says there is definitely something amiss with his neck and arm. And of course its the arm with the boo-boo hand where the IV exploded and he has the scar. She doesnt think that is causing nerve damage or anything, she doesnt think its related.

She said maybe its how he was in the womb, he always tilts his head to the one side and as a newborn, I remember always rolling up something to put next to his head to make it stay straight so its one of those things.

She said nothing severe or anything but he may need a little physical therapy. Of course Ed is ready to sue the NICU insisting its because of the IV issue. Its his right hand, I just hope there is no permanent damage. When the doc put him on his tummy, his arm gets stuck behind him and he cant get it to move. So good thing we found this now and with some help he will be fine. She said he is plenty strong, just needs to learn to move a different way.

She did of course mention size and "maybe because he was so big in the womb he was smushed etc" So make me feel guilty (for being so fat and having GD)why dont ya!!

PS speaking of fat, I have a consult for lap band surgery on Friday. If insurance approves it, I am doing it. Its laprascopic, day stay surgery and can be removed if you get pregnant (LOL). Its not like gastric bypass where they rip apart your intestines and reconnect them.

OK thats my update.
;-)

So sorry to hear about little Ben! Good for you though for knowing something was up and having him checked out. I'm glad to hear they expect him to be just fine with therapy.

Good luck with the lap band stuff too!

good for you following your instincts. I'm sorry Ben needs a little intervention, but jeez lucky you caught it so early. Poor little guy. And hey it has nothing to do with being fat. I'm not fat and Robert was as big as Audrey so its NOT THAT. Maybe it was a *lack* of Entenmanns that caused it.... I hear a good danish can cure a thousand ails.

Lapband?? You gonna fit into that miniskirt by summer! Let us know how the consult goes.

she had no intention of suffering alone

Kristen,

Sorry to hear about Ben, but it sounds like they are on top of it and that there is some help on the way. We love to blame ourselves for everything...it is hard to accept that there is no one to blame.

Yes, let us know how the consult goes. The wife of a friend at work had it done about 6 months ago and she has lost 40 lbs so far.

Good luck!

Thanks girls!
Yes I stopped taking the Alli. Lets just say Alli does not equal friend in the case of this medicine. It was ok for the first few days and then WHAMMO, it was God awful. My colon was like "girl, I never did anything to make you THIS mad at me, please stop taking this crud". Um, so I did. LOL

Oh, Kristen. I am so sorry. Does it sound like torticollis? I know there are some babies here who've had it and PT should take care of it. As for the IV site, I really don't think that's the culprit. Nerves are like little highways sending messages from the brain and spinal cord down the nerve to the muscles. If there is damage at some point along the nerve, it's like a road block on the highway. The cars can still get off and deliver their messages at every exit before the roadblock (i.e. any muscle above the nerve injury can still get messages from the brain/spinal cord). But cars cannot get past the road block. Or messages from the brain can't get past the nerve damaged area. So if there was damage in his hand, all of the muscles above that (his neck, shoulder, bicep, tricep, etc) should be working fine. But some of his fingers (below the damaged are) might not. Doesn't sound like that's what's going on. Sounds like his neck and upper arm are the problem areas.

As for the lap band, can I just make one suggestion? (Doesn't matter what you say- I'm gonna do it.) I did a rotation with a bypass surgeon and there are surgeons who are VERY good at making sure that the patient receives good support from nutritionists and psychologists after the surgery. Then there are those who just do the surgery and send patients on their way. Opt for the former. It's not just a matter of having a little surgery and then life changes magically. Most patients I saw struggled a lot with body changes (and if the spouse was obese, the struggles were magnified) after a lifetime of defining themselves as "the fat, funny one." Even though they all badly wanted these changes, there were many unexpected feelings that came up. So find a surgeon who requires his patients to receive treatment for those issues as well as the actual surgery. It not only will be better for your mental and physical health (and marriage... and kids) in the long run, but it is an indicator that the surgeon is interested in more than a quick buck. GL!!

And many, many hugs to you with Ben. He will be fine, mama. This is NOT your fault. Audrey was big too and she is ok. He may need a little PT, but he'll get it, be fine, and never even remember it. Take care.

Kristen- I must have been under a rock. I am so sorry. I didn't know that Ben was having issues. Good for you for going with your gut and pushing through to the dr. Good luck with the consult. Hopefully it will just be a little pt for him and he'll be better. I was going to say perfect, but he's already perfect.

And don't blame yourself for this either. Just because you had gd doesn't mean a gd thing. Like Chris? said, Aud was big too. It's not your fault.

GL also with the lapband consult. I hope insurance will cover it for you. Alli never enticed me to be it's friend. LOL! I have an agreement with my toilet and the Alli would break it! ;-) Let us know how it goes.
