bottles, early bedtime, & naps

noah's five months old now, and i just read the weissbluth chapter on 5-8mo olds. apparently, we're keeping him up WAY too late. he has been getting a bottle around 8:30 and going to bed around 9 or 9:30. weissbluth suggests bedtime between 6 and 8. i am DEFINITELY will to adjust, but i'm trying to figure out how the feeding schedule works. do we just then wind up with a "night feeding" at about 9:00 for the last bottle, or should i start making the daytime bottles bigger and eliminate the last one?

he currently gets five bottles. we have been doing a 6oz at 8:30, a 4oz and cereal at 11:30, a 6oz at 2:30, a 4oz and cereal at 5:30, and a 6oz at 8:30 - times are approximations depending on naps. which brings me to another topic.

naps. weissbluth suggests that naps be at certain times at this age. he seems to imply that the 2hr max wakeful period is no longer a concern - am i understanding correctly? noah tends to let us know when he's tired, but his napping is still sort of inconsistent. i also wonder if it's because he's tired from staying up so late (again, as implied by weissbluth).

help me sort this out ladies. TIA!!

Mindy-

I think at 5 mos we were putting Sammy and Sonia to bed around 8 and then doing one more feeding before we went to bed around 11PM.

Hey Mindy - WEisbluth is a sleeping genius BUT he is very clear to say that all babies are different. By 5months I think we had Sara down by about 8 or so as well. We worked it back to 7:00 at about 7 months and that is where she still is. As for naps - the 2 hour rule was really in affect with us until VERY recently. Sara would start to rub her eyes at almost the exact 2 hour mark! So it really depends on Noah. He is the one that will tell you what his nap schedule is but you need to know the very early signs. Rubbing eyes? Yawning? Just sitting still instead of trying to move all around? I know have Sara down every day at 12:30 - pretty much no matter what - and that works out great for us. She was on 2 naps a day by 6 months and held on until about a month ago when she dropped the AM nap. Follow Noah's lead and you will be fine!

reena,
i am wondering if we need to get him on 4 bottles instead of 5. he's over 19lbs, so i'm sure he could handle it. what do you guys think? including what i mix in with the cereal, he's getting about 32oz/day (5 bottles and 2 bowls of cereal).

TIA.
