CIO Night 1 Update

So, we did it. We started last night letting Margaux CIO. We were going to start tonight, but she woke up at 8 to eat, and we just said, "No time like the present." As some may remember, we had 2 obstacles to overcome with letting her CIO. The major one is that Margaux, at 5 months, is still sleeping in her carseat and completely swaddled. So, we have to get her into the crib, on her back, and swaddled. Plus, she still wakes between 2 - 4 am to have 1 feeding and then has been waking between 5 - 6 for another (I think this one is out of comfort/habit though).

We decided to keep her arms out so she could find her pacy and soothe herself, but swaddled her from under the armpits down. OK, on to last night.

I knew it was going to be a long night because I have tried on my own to get her to sleep on her back during naps and she cries for 40 mins. We put her down at 8:30pm and it was OK, and then, she started crying. She cried for 1 hour, and then stopped (YAH!) so, after 20 mins. of no crying, I decided to go check on her since we don't have avideo monitor. MISTAKE! She was in a comatose state and I woke her out of it. Dang it. So, she cried for another 1.5 hours, and then, finally slept. Well, she woke once at 12:20pm and finally, DH walked in, gave her a pacy and walked out and she slept until 3:45am when she woke to eat. She fussed a bit during the night, but no waking and if she did - she got herself back down. I fed her at 3:45am, put her right back down and not a peep! But, then she woke at 5:45am and we let her cry off and on on her own until 7:15am when we went in a got her for the morning. I could tell with that cry that it was not a 'hungry' cry and so I was OK letting her cry in the morning.

I just put her down for her morning nap and she didn't cry! Nothing! That was 20 minutes ago, so we will see.

So, overall, last night was HARD. Listening to her cry and cry and cry was very hard. And neither of us slept very well last night because we were just waiting for her to wake. But, it was ok. I know it will only get better and it is for her own good!

Just wanted to give the update!!

good luck with CIO, it is hard but in the end it will make your daughter a great sleeper. just so you don't feel so bad, Marin was a horrible sleeper and when we let her CIO at 9 months old (i was just so done with getting up at night by that point), she cried for almost 4 hours she just wouldnt give up.

the next night was a lot easier (for both of us LOL), maybe an hour or so, and i think the next night was even less. By the 4th night she was crying for less than 10 minutes. she is an amazing sleeper now, goes to sleep at 7pm and wakes at 7am. she also naps for 1 1/2- 2/12 hours which is nice, although my life is completely based on her nap and sleep schedule in the end it is really worth it to have 2 kids who are good sleepers.

good luck with the next 3 nights.... you should be good by then
