Freebies after IVF?

So, I can't quite believe I'm posting this question, since I've seen so many people ask similar ones and I know kind of what the answer it, but here it goes.

We're not really sold on doing IVF again, for a number of reasons, but would love to have a third baby. Does anyone know that stats for how many people manage to have a spontaneous pregnancy after IVF? Anyone asked their OB? (Mine is vague). I'm fairly young---32---and our diagnosis was either unexplained or endo, depending on who you ask.

Hi Rebecca, my sense is it depends greatly on the diagnosis. There have been plenty of freebies around here; Heather and I come to mind, and we're both unexplained. I recall my OB giving me the 6w pp warning saying she had seen it plenty in her practice (she's my RE's personal OB). Of course I pish-poshed her.

I've gotten sort of contemplative about things these last couple years. Seems to me there is absolutely no harm in hoping for the best. Being pessimistic has saved NOBODY from disappointment. I learned that here from a smart, smart woman.

((I hope everyone here gets the family they want))

Hi Rebecca,

I'm afraid the responses you are going to get on this will be anecdotal rather than statistical. I'm not sure anyone has any stats on this! It would certainly be interesting to know.

I have another anecdote to add, about friends of mine. They had one child easily and thought the next one would be easy, too. Not so! They underwent IUIs and at least one IVF cycle with no luck. She was a poor responder and already "old" (say, 39 or so) while this was happening. They were just waiting to raise the money for another IVF cycle when she found she was pregnant "the old-fashioned way."

I know you were asking about freebies after successful IVF cycles...but this one was a freebie after a failure! And there are other stories of this sort of thing, too.

I think the more we know about fertility, the more we realize that there's so much we don't know.

GL to you!

Hi, Rebecca-

I think it would be almost impossible to determine the odds of getting a freebie after IVF.

I got slammed last time I said it was about 75%. LOL So I wont say that again BUT it seems to ME that it happens ALOT. Just think about all the people on here, plus the people your OB tells you about ("What do you mean no BCPs, you know I have sooooooooooo many patients who did IVF then got a freebie") and the ones of legend as well.
So if you ask me, it happens alot. So good luck! The key is to not think about it and "relax", "go on vacation" or "start the paperwork for adoption". One of those usually works.

Hi Rebecca!
Sorry but I don't have any stats either but the diagnosis of the reason for IF would obviously make a difference. I was diagnosed with moderate/severe endo and did IVF and had Cara. Knowing that endo is cured temporarily with pregnancy I knew that there was a shot of getting pg. again and that happened and I just had my freebee Ryan.
I would say that there is a decent chance that it could happen for you.

Good luck!

we got a freebie 5 years after we did IVF, but I think the diagnosis is the biggest factor and probably would make getting official stats hard. We had unexplained and ended up at IVF by accident, our fourth IUI cycle was converted for overproduction. After having my oldest I went through a roller coaster of events. Health issues with him, depression, marital issues, work issues, weight issues

Hi Rebecca!
I can't believe it has been 2 years since we had our IVF miracles!!
My diagnosis was unexplained, but then a blocked tube was found on my 2nd c-section. I got pregnant with our second four months after I delivered Oliver. I hope everything works out for you!! We are actually using our frozen embryos this August. It was very surreal going back to the fertility doctor!
I hope all is well, how was their 2nd birthday's? We have Oliver's on Friday and his party on Sunday, all he talks about are balloons for his birthday!!
Take Care,
Tammie

Hi Tammie,

I know, can you believe that they are two now?! We had a great family & friends party for the kiddos---everyone had fun and there were no meltdowns.

Thank you for your words of encouragement---and good luck to you with the frozen embryos. My twins were a FET cycle--put two back and got twins! FET's are great--so easy and (mostly) shot-less. Ok, except for the PIO.

Enjoy the party!
