Nicholas has been sick since the day after he entered daycare. He's had the rash (also talked about it in my other post about soap) for going on two weeks now off and on. Today I get a message from daycare saying the teachers are concerned because the spots are getting worse and he's started scratching them. The desonide cream is doing nothing. His Zyrtec is doing nothing. There could be a million things he's allergic to that could be causing this and it's seriously driving me crazy!

I have an appointment with the doctor tomorrow to get a referral to a pediatric allergist/immunologist. But, in the meantime my Mama Bear instincts keep saying FIX.IT.NOW.

Look at these pictures. Do these look like hives to you??? The last picture that show his hands, you can see how red and splotchy they are from the damn soap. Grrrrrr.... I am not a doctor and I can't fix it for my baby and it's driving me NUTS.

Poor guy.

My mom used to get hives on occasion, and they were never that localized. They were more systemic, and all over her body. Not saying these aren't hives, just that they look different from what I've seen. Are they all over him, or just in the spots that the pics show?

Is this a DC center or in-home? I'm just wondering about pets. Could it be insect bites? I react strongly to bites, especially mosquito and flea.

hmmm the first pic of his arm does look like when I get hives. Did you try benadryl? If its hives, that would clear it, no?
Definitely ER time or specialist if ped is not giving you answers on this. What the heck is it????? ;-((( If its still getting worse as we speak, I dunno- I would go to ER. I mean you wont be able to get into specialist same day anyway.......
Its got to be something at the daycare they are either giving him or something at the place.

its just the hands and forearms, right? yeah, its probably the soap they're using. I've had hives once and yeah it looked sort of like that. On the other hand, it could be flea bites as Jodi suggested. The raised areas are sort of clustered and fleas do that; take a bite, and move on mm away to next bite. When I had allergy hives, and it was from detergent BTW, it was more spread out, not clustered. But that could be ME. If it were me, I wouldn't give him a dang thing until I saw the doc tomorrow. I would want her to see it in its full glory. Poor Nick!

And oh god no don't go to the ER for this. You would be triaged to the bottom of the pile. Unless you really like spending HOURS in a waiting room with a wiggly and crabby toddler where he will pick up all new viruses and icky bugs. Nothing dirtier than a hospital. Tell me you have a new ped BTW. Tell me you fired that donkey from last year.

Andrea-

I am sorry you are feeling overwhelmed. I can only imagine how frustrated you must be.

I had hives during my PG and they looked like welts more spread over a larger area. I know this sounds gross-but on WebMD they have a rash picture area where you can look at different types of rashes. I did this when I had the hives initially because I didn't know what they were.

So, after I wrote this message, the daycare called and said that the rash seemed to have gotten worse. I called the doctor (I haven't fired the ped, Betty, but he now sees another doc in the facility and he's MUCH better) and told them I needed him to be seen ASAP.

I told him about how Nick had gotten sick right after starting daycare (Jodi, it's a facility not a home) and that I'd brought him in and another doc put him on amox. I explained that he'd always been sensitive to foods like tomatoes and eggs and I thought that his hands were maybe reacting to the soap at the daycare. I also told him that we'd switched to a Paraben free bath soap thinking that may have had something to do with it.

He did a full out check of his body (the poor kid even has welts on his feet!) and said that it looked to him like a reaction to the amoxicillin. Even though Nick finished the med late last week, I guess if you are allergic to it then it can take a while to work its way out of your system.

He said that it was definitey hives and definitely a systemic reaction (meaning the soap has nothing to do with it) which is how an allergy to penicillin usually presents. He gave us a script for prednisonol (sp?) and started him off with a really high dose for three days and we'll work our way down over the next 12 days. He also is referring us to a pediatric allergist for allergy testing.

Geez Oh Pete...I sure hope he's right! I feel so badly for him especially since he's been so itchy.

Anyway, just wanted to update and THANK YOU all for responding with your thoughts. I was seriously at my wits end when I posted!!
