Please help my bb's

I have been nursing Mack for 14 weeks now. Just recently it has begun to hurt! I am so bummed out. The only thing I can think of is that when I am nursing her in bed at night (in the dark) she isn't latching properly. So, how am I going to get any sleep?

Last night I fed her in the living room (1:30) so I could watch her latch. I rocked her to sleep and placed her in the crib (2:30) she woke up right away. I took her back into the living room so I could avoid nursing in bed and rocked her again. I put her back in her crib (3:00) and got into bed. Neighbors friggin dog barked and she was awake (3:04). Darn. So, I threw her in bed and did my best to get her on the boob properly and it huuuurrrrtt.

I don't think it is thrush. I had her checked last Thursday and she was fine. I don't know what to do. We have a LC at the main hospital here but I have a feeling she'll just say don't nurse her in bed. I find myself wondering if her tiny little mouth had trouble at first and now she has bad habits.

Sorry to whinge. DH is just so not into my complaining because he hasn't a clue. Nipple pain is like no other and it just keeps comin' and comin' every 2 hours.

PS: I nursed Fiona for a year this same way and had no problems at all.

Hi Annie,

I don't have a definite answer for you, but I don't think you should stop nursing in bed. It rocks, and it makes all the difference for a tired mom!

You said you don't think it's thrush, but are you sure it isn't mastitis? Might want to get it checked out just to be certain. Also, I assume you're using something like Lansinoh...

If you rule out the various medical stuff, then maybe it's just a question of some more toughening. Hang in there!

So sorry you are going through this. Since I am the queen of mastitis--(3 times already--I am the pro!) my first thought is whether it was that? Where is the pain--is it in your nipple or in your breast. All 3 times i have had it, I have had pain in the breast (not the nipple) however it hurt like a son of a gun when I nursed. Another sign of mastitis may be any red streaks/lines on the BB. I also had achiness throughout my body. If you have any of these signs, go to the Dr. immediately. Seriously, mastitis comes on fast (24 hours) and if you get the antibiotics quickly enough you can save yourself a lot of pain and agony.

It seems odd that Mack would have developed a bad latch. As a BTDT mom I am sure you know about this site, but has been a lifesaver for me with BF. If it is not mastitis, maybe the site can give you some answers!
