Hi everyone ~ hope all of you are doing well.
On Friday, April 13th (yes, I know ... what a day to give birth .... Friday the 13th) my twins were born by emergency c-section. Connor Michael was born at 6:58 a.m. weighing 4 pounds 12 ounces and was 17 inches long. Riley Madison was born at 7:00 a.m. weighing 4 pounds 5 ounces and was also 17 inches long. They were pretty early .... born at 34 weeks 5 days gestation. Both babies have done so well for being premature, and we all got to come home on Tuesday, April 17th. I am trying to breastfeed and that is turning out to be much more difficult than I thought. Riley has taken to the breast, Connor just likes to lay up there and sleep after latching on. A friend of mine has said that is just the boy coming out in him .... give a man a booby and he will fall asleep.
I found after the emergency section that I had had a placental abruption. I woke up at 2:00 a.m. to use the restroom, and before I could get out of the bed I felt a gush of fluid. I assumed that it was my water breaking, and in the process of waking up my husband, I felt another gush of fluid. Both of us were getting out of bed, trying to get to the bathroom when he turned on the lights and we realized it was not fluid, but blood. Talk about being scared. We paged my ob, he said to get to labor and delivery, which we did. However, I don't think he realized how much blood I was really talking about. The nurses kept saying sometimes you lose blood when your cervix starts to dilate very fast and I believe they told the dr. that is what they thought was happening. The dr. called and wanted to try magnesium, which we did. They also gave me a pain shot called Stadol(?) which was a joke. At that point ~ 2:45 a.m. ~ I was 1 cm dilated. Well, the contractions kept coming and were between 1 and 3 minutes apart. Another bag of magnesium did nothing. At 5:30 a.m. I was 3 cms. When he got there at 6:30 and checked, I was 6 cms and he could feel baby A lowering into the birth canal with a hand above the head. It was at that point he decided we had to go right then. The emergency section was scary .... my husbad was not allowed in the room and I was put totally out with a tube down my throat. Next thing I know I'm waking up and they are telling me I have 2 babies. Connor's apgars were 4/8 .... Riley's were 6/8. Connor was in the amniotic sac that the placenta tore away from the wall of the uterus. The delivery nurse told me he was covered in blood and had ingested alot of it. That was the reason for his low scores .... he needed quite a bit of stimulation she said. Riley was higher and although smaller, seemed to do better.
Now we are home, and I have to say, it is wonderful to have them both healthy and here. I am experiencing the baby blues in a real kind of way ... and this is new to me .... I don't remember any of that after giving birth to my 10 year old daughter. I see the dr. in a week or so and am definitely going to discuss this with him.
Hope you all are taking care of yourself and I wish you the absolute best with your pregnancies and hope you have happy and healthy babies.
Take care everyone,
