Sydney & Megan make an exciting entrance

I just thought I'd let everyone know that my twins have arrived (and it is quite the birth story!!!).

First, the vital stats:

Birthday: Wednesday, November 29
Sydney Kay
5:10 am
4 lbs 11 oz

Megan Abigail
5:29 am
5 lbs 5 oz

They're in the NICU now, but they're doing really well. They came at 33 weeks, so they're preemies with the usual preemie problems. At first, they were both on oxygen and Sydney was on the CPAP machine. But, they are both completely breathing on their own now. They still have feeding tubes because they haven't mastered sucking and breathing at the same time yet, so they have to learn to do that. They are also having trouble keeping their temps up, so they're in isolettes. Their bilirubin is also really high, so they're working on that. Right now they're separated, but tonight the doctor said that in a few days they're going to try to get them back together. I think they'll do better when they can snuggle up to each other. :) I'm not really sure when they'll be home, but the doctor said probably 3-4 weeks at this point.

Now for the CRAZY birth story. This is one of those insane things that if it were in a movie, it wouldn't be believable. ;) Anyway, I went to the doctor for a regular exam Tuesday afternoon. He said he was still wanting to shoot for 36 weeks and I scheduled an appt for next week like usual. I went to bed that night feeling fine. But, I woke up at 4:30 in the morning because my water had broken and it was gushing out. I got up to go to the bathroom to make sure that's what it was. I told my DH it was showtime and called my doctor. He said he'd meet us at the hospital. DH called his grandmother and said we were bringing Jack over to her and heading to the hospital. At this point I'm considering showering, but I start having strong contractions and decide against it. I stuck a towel between my legs and started trying to get dressed. I managed to put on pajama bottoms, and by now the contractions are really strong and coming one on top of the other. I tell DH that I don't think we have time to drop Jack off and we should go straight to the hospital. He calls his grandma and tells her to meet us there. I live in a suburb of Dallas, and the hospital I was going to is in Dallas and about 20 minutes away when there's no traffic. Anyway, so DH takes Jack to the car and puts him in his carseat. I pick up my purse and make it to the entryway of the house when I get a totally uncontrollable urge to push. I grab the wall, start to cuss, and scream for my DH to call an ambulance. So, he stands on the front porch and calls 911. I swear I wasn't really pushing, but all of a sudden Sydney slides right out into my underwear and pants. I start screaming for DH who decides he needs to go back to the car and get Jack. He comes back in, takes Jack back to his crib, and finally comes back to me. He pulls my pants down and grabs Sydney, who had come out crying. So, we stand there freaking out until after what seemed like forever (but probably wasn't really that long) a policeman shows up. He was so young looking! I swear he couldn't have been more than 18. Anyway, he comes in and takes Sydney from DH and tries to make sure she keeps breathing. Then a firetruck and an ambulance arrive. The paramedics come in and clamp and cut the cord. I tell them there's another baby coming. I walk out the door with them and get on the gurney and they put me in the ambulance. They have Sydney wrapped in something that looks like aluminum foil. We take off for the hospital with the lights and siren going. I tell them where my doctor is and they say there's no way we're going to try that, so we head for a smaller hospital in the little town I live in. We make it almost to the hospital and Megan decides to join us. So, I had one baby in the entryway at home, and the other baby in the ambulance. And my doctor was planning to schedule a c-section!!! I still can't believe that it took less than an hour from when my water broke to have two babies! Jack took 18 hours of labor - but I guess the girls were in a big hurry! Anyway, my DH finally remembered to call his grandma and tell her where we were and called my doctor to tell him we weren't going to make it to that hospital.

I feel great! I'm a little sore, but other than that I'm doing great. I spent the first 24 hours after they were born stuck in bed on magnesium sulfate because my bp was super high. I think it was the excitement of the delivery, but the doctor wanted to be careful. So, I didn't really get to see the girls until the second day. That was a bit of a bummer, but I'm so glad everything is over and turned out ok. Now I'm just praying we have the girls home by Christmas.

Wow! What an entrance! I'm so glad that you and the babies are all doing well. You made it through one of my biggest fears. My daughter was a precipitous labor as well and now I am so worried about having twins since their timing seems to be so much more unpredictable. You are very lucky and blessed. Enjoy those girls!

Ali -

Congratulations on the arrival of your twins! That's quite a story that you have to tell the girls:)

Those are terrific birth weights for coming at 33w. My babies were born at 33w6d and weighed 4lbs 6oz and 5lbs 6oz. They also came home after 11 days - so hopefully your babies will be home sooner than you think!

Oh my gosh. I'm so glad everything turned out okay, and that you and your babies are fine. I would be so scared if something like that happened to me. Infact, I've been worrying a lot lately, about what if I don't make it to the hospital in time. Take care, and I hope your babies are home for Christmas.

OMG! They really weren't messing around, were they?? =) What a 'fun' story - although I'd probably have had a heart attack right there in my entryway! ;)

Congrats, mama!!
