Hi...I am almost 5 weeks PG and have had two hCG blood tests and I am curious if these numbers mean anything to any of you in terms of a singlton or twin. At 4 weeks, 1 day it was 336 and then at 4 weeks 3 days it was 1373. What do you ladies think?? My u/s is next week, but I am going carzy with wonder......

thanks!!!

This is a good link discussing hCG levels: http://www.bobrow.net/kimberly/birth/hcglevels.html

If you are about 5 weeks pregnant, which would be 35 days from you last menstrual period, normal levels of hCG are from 18 to 7,340 mIU.

However, based on the average ... at 33 days past your LMP, with a singleton, it would be 450 mIU and at 36 days it would be 1,500 mIU. With twins, on average, at 33 days it would be 1,500 and at 36 days 19,200. The ranges for those averages are much more dramatic.

Good luck to you! Although understand that the only way to confirm a twin pregnancy is via u/s. Based strictly on your hCG levels though, it looks to me like you're only carrying one.

Ok, I just re-read your post and I didn't realize you had given exact weekly dates. Sorry LOL.

Your hCG levels are definitely high for the time frame, perhaps you are carrying two (or more ;)) It's hard to tell though based just off of your hCG levels.

Hope your wait isn't as bad as you think it will be!

Thanks for the reply Megan...you must get this question on this board A LOT!! I realize hCG is really not an indicator at all, but I guess I need to do something to fill the time between now and the u/s, so I thought I'd get as much info as I could.

Thanks again for the reply.

Lindsey,

I did a lot of research on this when I first found out I was pregnant, too. I was hoping for twins. You do have a high hcg, which could mean a lot of things. But, what would really make me think of twins is the way it increased so much in a 48 hour period. It's supposed to double in that amount of time and your's did more than that. Were you on fertility medication? Of course, they say it's not always an indicator and I'm proof of that. Mine barely doubled, like exactly double plus 3 points or something, so I was sure I was NOT having twins, but my first u/s (7 weeks)........twins. So, who knows? It kind of looks like it to me, and if you have other factors (fertility treatment, history of twins, etc), then it really looks like it.

Let us all know. Good luck.

Hi Julie...thanks for the reply!!

I just did my first round of IVF strictly for the use of PGD (preimplantation genetic diagnosis- I carry a genetic disorder we'd like to avoid passing on to our kids- it only affects males) and...they put two female embryos back. So on top of not having any fertility problems (we have a 17 month old boy concieved naturally. He does not have the disorder...Talk about a blessing! We decided not to tak our chances again). I am a little nervous that both embryos took.

So-- I guess with my hCG numbers, my age (27), the IVF with 2 embryos and not having fertility issues has me leaning towards twins. I am really going batty waiting for the u/s!! I don't know if I can handle twins! We will be trilled either way, but twins seems a bit scary at this point!! I have such admiration for all of you with twins or more!!! What a hard, but rewarding, job I am sure!

Thanks again for your insight and CONGRATS CONGRATS on your twin pregnancy!!!

Lindsey, I had the same emotions when I was suspecting twins, but didn't know for sure. And I'll tell you, once you see your babies on that ultrasound screen, it's love at first sight.

Make sure to keep us posted about the ultrasound!

As the other ladies said hcg numbers vary vastly from each lady and there is much overlap between a singleton & twins. They can "point" to a twin pg but not diagnose one.

Good Luck at your u/s....I hope you will be joining us.

My levels were not as high as yours, but I just found out on the 17th that I am carrying twins. We also did IVF and transferred 3 embryos on day 3. I had the feeling I was carrying more than one because I was very sick and started to show at 7 weeks. Good luck at the ultrasound!
