Does enlarged uterus mean twins?

Hi moms of multiples! Help me out please. Were any of you told you had a large uterus when you were carrying twins? I went in for my first pregnancy appointment today and was told my uterus is larger than it should be. My youngest child is almost 7, and I've had normal exams since then, so it's not the result of previous pregnancy. I'm only about 5 weeks pregnant. During the exam, she said my uterus hasn't turned blue yet. That happens by 8-9 weeks, and I had a period in late August, so my dates should be correct. My midwife says we're not doing an ultrasound yet, because they might not find a heartbeat this early, and it would be stressful. She also isn't ordering hormone levels in bloodwork, because they vary so much and I have no complications.

My midwife says a large uterus means dates are wrong, fibroids, cysts, or twins. We just ruled out the wrong dates. I have no history of fibriods, and nobody else in my family does. I've had a few suspected cysts over the years, but they've been extremely painfu. (I get really bad cramps for a few weeks and can barely walk, and they go away with my period, I've never had one ultrasounded because they will only do that if the pain continues more than one cycle.) I've had no pain this month, so I don't think it's a cyst. I was told to take extra folic acid and we'll do an ultrasound at my next checkup (2 month checkup at the end of October, I'll be 9 weeks then.)

Anyone have ideas?

It definitely could be. With my first pregnancy my midwife taught me how to feel my uterus and this time I was in maternity clothes by 6 weeks! I really thought I'd had my dates wrong and conceived in December, not April, and that the two periods I'd had since then were random bleeding. I thought that would be more probable then twins. I was wrong!

I'm definitely not showing, so I don't know. With my son (2nd pregnancy) I was in maternity clothes by six weeks. He was just a big baby. Both my previous pregnancies I felt horrible and spent my days throwing up or sleeping. This one is nothing like that. No sickness, no tiredness, no sore boobs, I feel perfectly normal except for the whole positive pregnancy test thing (and I got a positive early, several days before missed period). I did have some symptoms (mostly

It could be, though as your midwife said- it can be a number of things. Is she the same person who has examined you previously, if not it's possible she thinks something is abnormal that others didn't bother mentioning. Unfortunately an ultrasound is the only reliable indicator of if it's twins or something else. I hope it turns out to be whatever you are hoping for.

Same midwife, yes. I've seen her on and off for a decade, the last time was this June. Thanks for putting up with my question. I know you moms of multiples have lots on your plate. I think twins sounds exciting and hope to join you guys soon.

Sorry it didn't end up being twins! Congrats on your pregnancy though!
