Possible multiple pregnancy...

I am completly confused today. I went to my first appt at 8 weeks along because of my health issues. I had a full check up done then and the dr. said my uterus was exactly what it should be for 8 weeks. That all changed today. I went for my 13 week appt. I am 12 weeks and 4 days. My uterus is below my belly button, which is more what it should be for 18-20 weeks, or right if I have more than 1. I was able to feel the baby(ies) since the day after my 8 week appt. and though I knew it was early to feel it I thought being my 4th pregnancy it could be normal. The dr. specifically said he didnt find a second heartbeat though hes very suspicious that I am pregnant with multiples. I know my dates of period, and the specific dates of ovulation. I have kept up pregnancy tests regularly because of my periods being irregular for the last 2 years. Some were home tests, but most were blood tests at the dr. At this point the only thing I can conclude is there has to be more than one. I had an inkling before my appt. that it was possible. The movement, and the widespread area I was feeling it was different than with my other pregnancies. Rather than small flutters it was a jumble of movement. This pregnancy so far has been more difficult than the last 2, though no where near as hard as my first. Acne is much worse, the naseua was worse, and I was so tired I could hardly get out of bed. I knew it was different. I do have a cousin that is having problems because of a tumor growing along side her baby so I know that multiples is not the only possibility, but I have pretty much discounted the chance that I was farther along than I thought. I am kind of hoping for twins after today, but I am afraid to hope and find out its not. I am also not sure why I would want that much extra to take on at once, so I am very confused yet about how I am feeling. I am curious to how others found out about the multiples. What was different for everyone? Was it a natrually occuring deal? Or was it caused by invetro or fertility drugs? We never used anything but the old fashioned try, try agian approach. My ultrasound is scheduled for the 23rd to see what is actually going on. I am afraid I will be disappointed, but afraid to find it really is more than one. Just plain confused. Love to chat with others who have been through all of this!

Welcome and congratulations on your pregnancy. :-) What you're describing could be a multiple pregnancy, or it could just be that it's your fourth and things pop quicker each time. Some people are sicker with multiples or have more symtoms while others have no idea until an u/s informs them.

My twins were natural, first month off the pill, nursing a toddler, DTD once the entire month. I was surprised to be pregnant let alone with two! ;-)

Try and not stress too much until your u/s, and please let us know your results.

Dr. did say that a change this extreme in 5 weeks time is not normal even for a 4th child, but thats the most I know. Its hard to imagine 2 babies rather than 1. Yes the ultrasound will give us the anwser for sure. I dont want to get my hopes up and be disappointed, especially since this was our last planned pregnancy. It just feels like I never want to be done having children. Congrats on your twins as well. I will let you know the outcome.

have you had an ultrasound yet?  I had mine at 7 weeks and we saw right away that there were 3 babies.  It would take all your guessing and worries away because you'd see it.

My pregnancy was a surprise.  We didnt do IVF.  I felt like hell a week before AF (period) was due and knew I was preggers.  I went in for the blood test and my lvls were sky high.

I wouldnt worry about the location of your uterus at this point. They dont measure that until you are 4-5 months along and it can be higher, closer to your belly button at this point. A full bladder and the way you're laying can be an issue.

I wish you all the best on your next apt.  Like Elissa said, try not to stress yourself about it.  Just stay focused on having a happy healthy pregnancy.

The other thing to remember is how very tiny they are at this stage. At 8 weeks a baby is about 1/2", the size of a kidney bean, and by 13 closer to 3", shrimp sized. :-) This early it's really hard to go by uterus size, they're so tiny that many could fit and you would still measure normal or close to normal size. Still could be multiples though, I'm surprised your OB didn't push for a sooner scan if he/she had concerns.

Thanks Wendy, we were incredibly lucky where I am and have zero damage or flooding. Out west the roads are underwater and canals are unable to handle the strain.

Now we have to pray for the northern gulf coast. :-(
