I know this varies from school system to school system so I was wondering how it is where you live?

Where we live my daughter would have gone to middle school this year for 6th grade. We are in an ALE though, which is k-12. And yes, there are times when they are all there together, because these are home schoolers, the kids are all really great and the older ones are very helpful and kind (and appropriate) to the younger ones. (Not saying that other kids are not, but there is not that attitude of "I can only be friends with you if you are in the same grade," that I saw when my daughter was in regular school in CA. The fact that it was CA maybe is the issue!)

For the purposes of graduation, for those who go for the diploma, 7-12 starts the graduation credits. I am not sure if we will do that or do the "Jump Start" program of taking classes at the community college.

we have k-8 schools and the transition from elementary to middle school isn't that clear cut. We have a VP for k-4 and 5-8 but thats probably more load then where they consider the transition. We have over 900 kids in the school so thats just as close to a 50/50 split they could get. k-6 goes the same hours, the state considers that in from 7th grade on they need longer hours in school so they 7th and 8th start earlier. Not sure at what point they start moving from class to class because mine is just in 3rd grade. I do like the fact that he doesn't have to move schools until high school I know there was talk of a central middle school but budget wise since all the schools were built for k-8 it would cost more to convert a school to just a middle school then theyd save.
