I got a paper from Nathaniel's school today saying that all 5th graders will be bringing home Dell Notebook Computers.

Hm, I might just get him a thumb drive and have him take that back in forth. I would worry about the device as well, unless it is the kind the police use with solid state drive that doesn't mess up when you drop it. Which I doubt, because in our tour of the police office last week, they said their laptops cost $5000.

I would ask if he can have one assigned to him at school that he is responsible for keeping charged and such there at school, but brings the thumb drive back and forth daily. I would offer to come in and show the teacher and him how to work the thumb drive at the school so that she knows how to use it too. If thumb drive doesn't work, then I would set up a gmail account and have him email the work. You would have to make sure you have compatible programs.

When we did K12, I turned down getting the "free" computer because we didn't have room for it, and we already had a laptop and a desk PC and didn't need more. I didn't want to be responsible for paying for it if something happened.

I have to wonder...what do they do for low income kids? Or families with more than one kid in the age range? (Step families may have more than one in the same grade, my family did.) That can get expensive.

I can't see my now 4th grade inattentive boy handling this well. His Fusion is a little different - it was made for rough handling, but at the same time he isn't taking it back and forth most days because we homeschool. I would be hesitant if he had to take it both ways every day.

the thing is that at the beginning of the year I sent a flash drive to school with him. It was on his supply list. Do you want to guess how many times he has bought that flash drive home all semester? Once.
All children on free or reduced lunches are getting their laptop for free.

My husband's school has iPads for the kids (for use AT school only though). He said that they are all covered for damage by special contracts, which is why the school pays 5x what it would cost to just go to Best Buy and get the same laptop. I think they know that kids are kids and some of them are going to get damaged. It's just realistic.

So, is this an optional thing for you, or does he have to take part? I can see the school wanting all kids to have computer access at home, but if you already do, why force a child to lug around a laptop? I think their backpacks are heavy enough already and, plus, that's a lot of responsibility - even if they are insured.

I emailed the principal and CC to his gen ed. teacher about me not wanting the laptop. I have not heard anything back from either of them, not unusual though. Most things you tell this principal fall on deaf ears. I am so glad his last semester w/ her as his principal is coming. I love his Elem. school but this principal is....well not easy to deal with.
