Our school supply list is so over the top

They had to open school for two days in advance of school starting on Thursday in order to allow families to drop off supplies, because they are acknowledged to be too heavy for most elementary school kids to take with them on the school bus.  I think the copier paper alone may have outweighed my 41-lb. second grader.

A teacher friend mentioned on FB just as an FYI that a lot of times administration makes up the school supply list without consulting with the teachers and so there are things on the list that they won't use in their classroom at all, but since they aren't consulted ahead of time, they don't have input into changing the list. I thought that was interesting. We took ours to the meet the teacher night the week before school started, she had each table in the room set up so you could drop off your supplies in the appropriate piles, put their pencil box together with what specific things they wanted in their boxes, as well as putting the label with their name on their composition notebook, and pick out their own cubby. I thought it was a nice way to at least get an idea ahead of time what they were going to really be using and for what.
