What does your DS 11 have an IEP for? If you don't mind my asking. Nathaniel (10 in 5th grade) has an IEP b/c he has Dyslexia. I am so worried about how that will go next year when he goes into middle school b/c he will have 7 different teacher, they change classes for all subjects, and everything is inclusion in middle school here.

I don't mind at all - we're very open about it, maybe because I've had two kids with IEPs and one with a 504. LOL - and my youngest had an IFSP in early intervention!

Ds11 has an IEP with both push-in (classroom) and pull-out (private) minutes for speech and expressive language. In K and 1 he had an aide, and he got PT and OT through third grade, for apraxia. It's a challenge to get him to write or even to answer things off-the -cuff. Given how much my dh speaks, and how he carefully considers each answer and word choice, I do wonder if it is hereditary (or maybe ds11 just has a future as an IT guy).

School can be challenging because ds is also gifted, so he's going to be in both gifted math (7th grade algebra, which is two grades ahead in our state) and gifted reading, which encompasses science, social studies, reading and english. Sometimes it's hard to make people understand that he's smart, but he just has trouble getting the words out, or getting them out so they make sense. We were very, very lucky to have a great elementary school and teachers who worked with him. In 5th grade, his lovely teacher let him sit next to her during writer's workshop the entire hour. Other kids would come up and work with her and get critiques, but ds was able to sit right next to her at the table and she'd guide him through. We're also lucky to have kids who are generally very sweet and caring. He's never been made fun of and although I don't think he's popular, he's respected and well-liked.

We met his case manager and therapist yesterday and they promised to work with the teachers if the demands got too great. They also will help him with things like extra books if he needs them (he's got some executive functioning challenges) and allowing

Hi. I am married, with 3 kids 11, 9, and 6. We have one dog, two cats, 22 ducks and 16 geese. We home school with an ALE in eastern WA. My middle, son, has an IEP for speech and OT, and gets accommodations for writing on state testing. He has gone through vision therapy and is reading above grade level now. He had all the signs of dyslexia before vision therapy. DD11 is in 6th grade. All the kids are in 4-H and do family friendly soccer (which is Saturday mornings, 9:30- 11. All at the same time, at the same park, in different age groups.) This year the kids will be doing a couple classes each at the ALE and doing bi-weekly field trips around the state.

Your son sound like my DS who is 9! OT, Speech (first diagnosed as apraxia, later downgraded to muscle delays.) He needed vision therapy (which did help a little with the right/left....but not much - I have that issue too.) Also diagnosed with ADHD and executive function...but the vision therapy took out the H, so, still some with the executive function issues. Sounds like your son is doing great in school! And, it sounds like you have a wonderful school.

Do you have a 504 plan or IEP for your daughter?
