Our district's homework policy is an additional 10 minutes of homework per grade. So a 2nd grader would get 20 minutes of homework, while a 6th grader would get 60 minutes.

My dd also is in 6th grade, but she has an LD so it usually takes her longer to do her homework than the average 6th grader, while my 2nd grader is above average and can get his work done in 5 minutes (so I make him do the challenge questions that aren't required). This year, all students also are required to read 15 minutes 5 nights a week.

As for what homework my dd gets, it's usually math problems from the textbook, spelling packet (each night they have to do something different, like writing the words in sentences, putting them in alphabetical order, dividing into syllables, etc.), writing about their reading, vocabulary, studying for tests. No projects have come home. This is the first year that my dd is actually reading more than is required. Loving that!

Late last year, my dd was asked to write a realistic fiction story, edit it (learning actual editing symbols) and write a final copy. She loved it so much that she is continuing writing new chapters for her story this year. Maybe your ds could do something like this? Genre of writing would depend on his interests.
