Math Confuses Me

No joke, I am going to be back up at my middle school (will be Nathaniel's middle school next year) with my 7th grade math teacher getting tutored so I can help Nathaniel with his homework before you know it.
I can do english, history, science, spelling, reading...but math blows my mind.
Anyone else get their mind blown by some of their kids homework?

Yep....the crappy way they were trying to teach the kids math last year.
Yes,
Our math was like that but it was manipulative based so no writing it out just using counters and such.

I have older kids, so I've made my peace with this, lol!
Math is not (yet) the issue (except how the books teach subtraction with borrowing. I learned a different way, and ended up teaching my kids that way so that I can help them with their work. Fortunately, we homeschool!) The issue for me is: Diagramming sentences. (And maybe that my kids can spell better than I can.) Diagramming I never got, and I have no inclination to learn. Though I feel like I should introduce my kids somewhat to it, but if they don't go to public school is there any chance that they will encounter it after high school?
I will check out Khan Academy, I remember you sharing that website once before.

LOL- dd18 and I were just discussing this because ds11 is starting middle school today, in the same program as dd18 did, and with a teacher who LOVES diagramming sentences.
