I'm not sure when Earth Day (4/22) turned into Earth Month (April) but I for one am glad that it did - and it's coming right up! In honor of the month where we try to spread the word about living more sustainably, tell me about an un-green habit (of yours or your family) that you'd like to change. (I promise I won't hold you to it!)

LMBO!

Yeah, we definitely need it, I just hate needing it! DH has a long commute from the mountains down to Denver, so he has a little fuel-efficient car he drives most of the time. When it snows he usually takes my SUV and I drive an old beater SUV we have just for snow days. It seems silly to have 3 cars for only two drivers, but to me it's greener than us driving 2 SUVs all the time. He'd be using double the gas!

Since DH works from home, his fuel efficient Civic is often available for me to use and I drive that whenever possible.

The van is nice when we go camping since it easily fits our tent and all other supplies.

What I find irking is people who drive SUVs that have never left urban/suburban areas!

I wish there was a bio-diesel place near me. I got that some for my diesel Suburban when we lived in CA, and it smelled like french fries! I only got it some times because the station was usually the opposite direction than I was going, but when I did go that way, I filled up.

Yes, three kids, too many miles from town, winter with drifts...maybe a Saturn Station wagon would get better mileage, but I couldn't fit in the straw bales, stuff from yard sales (reusing!) and bikes at times.

As a side there, I am cutting down on the straw bales for the ducks and geese. Last summer we got a 100 year old hay rake and we are now gathering up the grass clipping from our 3 acres to use for the animals during the winter. That hay rake sure beats using a leaf rake! And the kids think it is really fun to pack down the hay on the wagon when it gets up high. Now, if I could only get my neighbors to give me their horse droppings, I could fertilize the field, probably with that "honey wagon" that the other neighbor isn't using.....

I would like to use my drier less. The problem is, unless I can lock my dog away from it, I think he will eat it if I leave it up to go shopping or just don't pay attention. (He has done so to towels left on the fence to dry after swimming.) And I don't have a good place to put a line that he can't get into, because I need him to have the run of most of the place to keep other animals and roaming dogs from coming and eating my ducks and geese.

I'd love to be able to bike places! We live about 10 miles from town down a dirt mountain road, so it's just not feasible for me. I keep telling DH that our next house will be close to things like the grocery store, school and library for that purpose.

I already bring my own bags to the store, buy pretty green food, grow my own garden, recycle and often bike to work and school b/c we live only a mile or less from both.

I leave my outdoor lights on all night a few inside lights as well for the same reason. We now have a community watch b/c a house on the next street over from me was broken into a few months ago.
