Here's our Thought for Thursday~

How old should a child be before they are allowed to stay at home alone?

Very good question. My son is 9 and I still will not let him stay home alone. He is very responsible though, but I worry about something serious happening when I am not here, like a fire, or strangers pulling up....I actually tell my kids that even if we KNOW them, don't answer the door....when you watch the news, most crimes are done by those we KNOW. I did let him stay here in November while I took my daughter a few miles up the road to a friends house and then again the next day to pick her up. I was gone maybe 15 minutes and it was the best ever to him :) I am thinking maybe 11/12.....is that being too protective?

I didn't start staying at home alone until I was 13.

That sounds like a good age too. Makes sense that they may get scared and they do that now very easily. I know when my oldest daughter started staying by herself, she wouldn't do it at night, only during the day. If it got dark or close, she wasn't staying by herself. I think she was around 11 and my Mom lives right next door so they know they can go there if they need to.
