I was Wednesday Wondering...

Do you think kids these days know a little bit more about the birds and the bees at this age than we did?

I don't think my kids know more than I did at the same ages.

I do think it is likely that more children overall are knowledgeable.

I don't think Nathaniel knows more than I did either.

My son is in 5th grade and this is the year that introduce the subject at the end of the year so I plan on discussing it with him at home first.

The puberty talk has been moved to 4th grade at the kids' school. Too many kids are showing signs of puberty then, so they wanted to make sure the talks were timely. I really feel bad for girls dealing with puberty as 10 year olds. Seriously, needing to carry a purse to the bathroom in 4th grade. ugh.

The birds and bees talk is in 5th grade. I'm not sure when the more detailed talks take place. ie birth control, sexually transmitted disease, etc.

I've talked to J about the body changes he will see and a tad bit about the birds and bees. He has a few elementary books on his shelf that he can refer to when he has q's. He has a lot to learn about responsible sexual activity. I so am not ready to go there with a 5th grader. ugh.

I was 11 when I had to start carrying my purse to the bathroom. It was awful :( I just wanted to stay a kid for longer.

How do you feel about it being discussed in 5th grade? It really scares me to think about it b/c my son is in 4th grade now. I tend to lean towards it shouldn't be discussed until more of 6th and 7th grade.

We've never gone that in depth but things like 'when you grow up, get married and have a baby' have been brought up :) I really want to stress those things to Nathaniel. I didn't have those things stressed to me and I wish that I had. I was not 'loose' by anymeans, my first partner was my BF of a year but shortly after we broke up. I wish I had waited for my next BF which is my now DH. I wish someone had told me that it should be about love and being with someone you will be with for the rest of your life.

I'm not ready for the topic but I can see that as they move to middle school the timing is probably right.
