Year-round schoool?

Our district is considering switching to a year round school calendar. It's where, instead of having 3 months straight off in the summer it's more broken up throughout the year. The calendar they are considering is a 45-15 one where the kids would be in school for 45 days and then get off for 15.

I'm torn on how I feel about this, on one hand it would be nice to be able to vacation in some of the cheaper off-seasons but on the other hand, I think it would be tough to find childcare with this weird schedule. And when my kids are older, they wouldn't be able to get the typical "summer job" too.

Has anyone had kids in year round school before? Did you like it?

We don't. I have heard other countries do that. Guess it works ok for families with the tradtional 2 parent 1 income familes or in areas where ALL schools do that, but I can see it being a child care nightmare. I mean if every school in your state did it then I am sure if there is a call for child care it will be meet, but it one disctrict in a state does I don't see many vacation camps popping up. You couldn't even staff well because they would work what every 45 days. Most summer camps we've delt with use mostly college kids few high schoolers. Great summer job you can still sort of be a kid and get paid.

What is the rational for this from the school? Sometimes I wonder what goes through their minds. I know here it would be a nightmare. Our town has AC in most schools now but not all towns do because some still using schools older then my parents. Plus the teachers union would NEVER go for this.
