He's discovered chess

They had chess as an optional activity all week at camp, and ds is hooked.  I'm pretty ignorant of the game beyond the basic setup and the directions each piece can move.  Is the Richard James book about chess for kids any good for elementary school-aged dc's?

My 6 year old has gotten hooked on chess this week also.  He's still really frustrating to play with, because he hasn't learned the game that well yet, and his strategies are interesting.  Yesterday he took his own queen out with his bishop because he said  "he just didn't like her anymore because she ate his cheese."  But, I know my other kids started out that way too, and they can all beat me now.  Maybe I should find a chess game on the computer for him.  The computer would be more patient than I am, and also would not allow him to use friendly fire on his own pieces.  It's days like this that I have a hard time seeing the giftedness they talk about.
